Marina had thought that a book titled The Secrets of Water Magic would be a storybook. But it was not.

The first mysterious thing she noticed was the dedication: “Dedicated to you, as you are the only person who can read this book.”

And then there was the way the woman at the checkout in the bookstore had said, “Strange. I don’t remember us getting any book with that title.”

But she hadn’t really begun to wonder until she lay down on her bed and started reading her new book. This book was full of instructions for how to cast water-elemental spells. And the writing made magic sound real. Especially magic that created and controlled water.

She had to test this.

Marina picked up her water bottle and unscrewed the lid. Then she looked back at the section about moving and controlling water. The instructions felt, amazingly, so intuitive.

She turned back to her water bottle, passed her hand over the top, then raised her hand so her fingers pointed upward.

Water shot out of the open bottle, creating a geyser that shot all the way to the ceiling.

Marina gasped as she looked at the wet spot on the ceiling. Magic was real. And the book seemed like it had been written specifically for her.

Consulting the book again, Marina read about how to direct and control water,  and even create it from scratch. It all came so easily to her!

Then she read the last page: “Water is powerful and life giving, but it is not the only element in existence. There are three other books for wind, earth, and fire, and each is meant for a certain person. You must seek out your fellow mages!”

There were other mages? But where might they be?

Suddenly her phone rang. It was her best friend, Gail.

“Hey, Marina?” her friend said over the phone. “You know that strange book I found yesterday? It’s about wind magic.”

Marin’s heart beat fast. Then she smiled.“Can you meet me at the lake?” she said. “We have so much to talk about.”
