Evening Gift

I stare at the city
on a black-cloaked night
the sky’s heavy sigh
hangs in the air unmoving
spatters of white freckles
line the skin of the midnight
its delicate face blinking in and out
as the clouds shroud its fragile form
and as I walk by
the autumn leaves crunch beneath
the earth’s farewell to summer
the armored limbs reach out
and shed their drowsy petals
I stare at the city on a perfect night
