Maddy’s Magnificent Masterpiece

Maddy got up from her tenth fall on the ice. She ached all over. Why do I have to fall? she thought. Then Maddy stood up, a little wobbly on her skates. Maddy sighed and tried again—leg stretched behind, arms stretched out on either side, and jump in a . . . thump, went Maddy. Maddy grumbled as she got up and decided that she would go home and have dinner.

Maddy swapped her skates for snow boots and tromped through the snow across the park and reached her home. Maddy ran inside, took her jacket and boots off in the entry and went to the kitchen to set the table.

Her mom turned from the taco meat and said, “Home late? Now set the table quickly!” With that, she turned back to the stove.

Maddy then set the table, sliced the olives, poured hot cocoa, and ran to get her dad, who immediately got up and sat down with Maddy at the table. “Yum!” he said as his wife brought in the tacos.

Throughout dinner, Maddy talked about figure skating. After dinner, Maddy changed into her pajamas with ice skates on them and went to bed.

All night, Maddy dreamed she was in the Olympics and did all of her figures perfectly. The crowd cheered, “Bravo, Maddy!” She won first place!

When Maddy woke up, she glanced at the clock, and it said it was 4:30 A.M., but Maddy didn’t care. She had to get on the ice! Maddy got dressed, dashed down the stairs, ate some cereal, and wrote a quick note to her mom. She jumped into her boots, jacket, mittens, and scarf and ran into the dim morning light to the pond.

She took off her snow boots and pulled on her skates. Then, she glided onto the ice. She built up her courage and jumped. She was so surprised when she didn’t fall down! She looked up and saw a beautiful winter sunrise and thought, The is the best day of my life!
