Sour to Spectacular

I sleepily blinked my eyes open on Friday morning with a sigh. I had been dreading walking to school since the snow started heavily dropping down last night. I checked my alarm clock to see what time it was. Oh no! I must have slept in! Why hadn’t my mom woken me up?

Running down the hall to the kitchen. I realized that the snow was at least fourteen inches high.

“Surprise!” my mom exclaimed. “It’s a snow day, Eleanor! I arranged for you, Allison, and Harper to go sledding together at Park Arthur!”

My sour mood immediately turned. I was going sledding on the biggest hill around with my best friends! “Thanks so much, Mom!” I rushed to eat and get ready to go.

The drive there didn’t take long. The road was a bit icy, but Mom drove carefully. When we got there, my friends were nowhere in sight. My mom started texting on her phone. “H’mm. Harper is stuck in traffic, and Allison overslept and is running a big late. You can start sledding though.”

The first three times were fun, but by the time I was halfway through the fourth trek, I was getting worn out. Then I saw Harper’s car pull into the parking lot. I ran to the top to wave.

A few moments later, Allison got there, too. The sled slipped onto a smooth trail. Suddenly, it flew at least four feet off the ground! I was airborne! But soon the moment was over. The sled hit earth with a thud, but thankfully, it wasn’t painful. As the sled gradually slowed to a stop, my friends ran up to me.

“Eleanor, that was awesome. You went right up a ramp!” Allison exclaimed. “And I got it all on camera!” Harper added.

“No way!” I laughed. So that was how I went flying! This day had gone from sour to spectacular, and it had only just started.
