Charlotte’s Christmas

It was another cold winter day on the streets of New York City when Charlotte, a female golden retriever puppy woke up in the cold snow. That puppy was me!

After a few minutes I wandered off looking for some food crumbs that were left by other people. It was pretty easy for me because Union Square in New York City was very busy. I found breadcrumbs, parts of a burger, half of an apple, and part of a banana. But when I looked around I was on a different street!

I felt scared all by myself and searched for my home. Suddenly, a girl came running over, followed by her parents. The little girl was trying to convince her parents to take me home.

I felt like running away but I couldn’t because Lizzy was cuddling me like my mom would when we went to sleep on Union Square.

Finally, after all the convincing, Lizzy’s dad answered, “Maybe.”

I thought about it. Do I want a home? Sure, it’s bitter cold out here anyway. Then I started whimpering to get their attention.

“Oh, Mom, can I please take her home, please?” Lizzy begged.

“I’ll think about it, but not now. You are not old enough,” her mom answered.

So I returned to my normal routine searching for food, resting, and sleeping. But sometime around midnight a flashlight shined brightly in my face. I felt like I recognized them. Oh! It’s Lizzy’s parents! I wondered what they were doing here. Maybe they’re here to bring me home!

I was right! On the car ride to their house I heard them talking about surprising Lizzy on Christmas!

The next day was Christmas, and Lizzy came running down the stairs to open my box. She started cuddling me like she had done just yesterday. It was the best Christmas I ever had, even for Lizzy’s family that gave me a true home forever.
