New Poetry Contest: Wish

Submitted by: Elayna S., age 12, San Antonio, TX

My Wish

The songbird singing in the trees
I want its voice
The eagle soaring in the breeze
I want its wings
The flag fluttering in the sky
I want its joy
The waves lapping at the shore
I want their freedom

But actually, that’s not my plan.
It’s more than castles in the sand.
My one true wish would really be
To be free to be me.

I’m not who you think I am
I’m more different than you think
I don’t like princesses, frills, or bows
I even don’t like pink.

I wish and wish and wish for this
So that one day I might be
The person that I truly am
I’ll be myself, maybe.
