New Story Contest: Challenge

Submitted by: Gabriel K., age 8, Parma Heights, OH

One day I was playing with Grayson when suddenly I heard a click. I tried to get out of my room, but the door was locked. I called out for my mom.

“MOM” I screamed. “I’m locked in my room and I can’t get out!”

My mom came rushing down the hall. She tried to open the door but it was locked from both sides. “I can’t open the door!”

I tried unlocking the door with a butter knife, which I kept in my room The butter knife had worked before but today it didn’t.

Grayson and I were four at the time. My mom went outside and Tessa, my sister, was telling us it was going to be OK. I saw my mom get a ladder out of the garage. She climbed up the ladder and opened my window.

“Come out, Gabe and Grayson,’ said my mom. But we were still too scared. We were crying so hard. My mom got off the ladder and ran inside. She got my brother Peter and my sister Olivia. My mom ran back into the house to get the tools to take the hinges off the door.

My sister Olivia and my brother Peter climbed up the ladder and got inside. It took about forty-five minutes of crying and waiting for the door to open. It finally came off the hinges.

Grayson and I ran out of the room. We put the door back on the hinges and got a new doorknob. But the doorknob doesn’t lock now, so I can’t lock it from the inside of my room. I also kept the butter knife in my room, just in case it jams again. Next time we had a playdate we made sure the door did not lock again.
