Why Are We Scared?

I’ve always wondered why
Whenever we see a bug,
Our first instinct
Is to crush it.

Don’t we know that this
Was their home first?
Around five million years ago,
They were here.
And we weren’t.

Let’s swap perspectives.
You’re on the floor,
Looking for something.
Maybe it’s food,
Maybe it a new place for your hive.
Doesn’t matter.
You see a foot, a book, something—
You see nothing.

Can’t you see?
They’re more scared of us
Than we are of them.
And they are rightfully
Scared
Of us.
So why are we scared of these little critters,
Barely the size of our finger,
If that?
