The Problem of the Cricket
Cricket chirping in the night,
You have kept me from all fright.
The soft rubbings of your wing
Have giv’n me luck e’er since last spring.
Winter comes now with snow.
Then away from here you’ll go.
I do not want you to flee.
Who shall keep me company?
Who shall sing on through the night,
Keeping me from terror and fright?
So here’s my plan, here’s what to do:
I’ll take you in, I’ll shelter you.
All through the long, cold winter storm
In my house I’ll keep you warm.
There’s just one problem left to solve.
How will I get you within my walls?
Crickets are not easy prey.
They use their legs to get away.
But, don’t worry, cricket, I’ll find a way
That you won’t have to go away.
