New Poetry Contest: Holiday Tradition

What Matters Most

Fried and fluffy fritoli
Yugoslavian coffee cakes
My sister makes the gnocchi
The rosettes my father bakes

These foods may be new to you
But in our family they’re old
We can’t let our stories die
That is what we are told

The stories of great daring
And memories of stowaways
Are passed down through the ages
And never fail to amaze

Our food is our connection
To our family of the past
And still shall we speak of them
To make their memories last

And in the nights of winter
When we gather close
We tell of Christmases past
And family, which matters most
