When It Started

I don’t know when it started.
Was it when we met, playing house, back in our early years of school?
When we were small as molecules,
Were we tied together with a string on a spool?

I don’t know when it started.
Was it when you joined my girl scout troop?
When we were in the same group,
Did our flowers grow instead of droop?

I don’t know when it started.
Was it when we were in second grade?
When we passed out the postcards we used to trade,
Was that when our friendship was made?

I don’t know when it started.
After so many years, why is the moment still lost?
When the memories are covered in frost,
Will I finally know when our paths first crossed?

I don’t know when it started.
But we have stuck together like glue.
You support me, and I support you,
And I know this moment is long since due.

I don’t know when it started.
And now, that’s okay,
Because even when the skies are gray,
Together is where you and I will stay.
