Story Contest: A Magical Talent
Terrible Chef Makes the Best Brownies
Hank had always dreamed of being a chef. He loved to cook and had attended culinary school, but he was horrible. It was a miracle that he had managed to graduate. Hank got a job as a chef at a restaurant in town, but he quickly earned the reputation "worst chef ever." Customers walked out when they realized Hank was the chef on duty.
One day when Hank was at work, he was told to make breakfast for a hungry family. He popped bread into the toaster and started to fry the eggs. Hank accidentally dropped the eggshells into the eggs and didn't cook them fully. Meanwhile the bread was burning in the toaster. Hank didn't notice until the fire alarm went off. The restaurant had to be shut down for a week. Needless to say, Hank lost his job.
Despite his poor cooking skills, Hank was hired again as a chef at a soup bar. One day a customer ordered tomato soup. Hank peeled tomatoes, stewed them, and then added one cup of salt. When the manager tried it, Hank was fired again.
Hank had no job, and everyone hated his cooking. I'm going home to make myself a big batch of brownies, Hank thought. Hank walked into his kitchen, mixed the ingredients, and put the brownies in the oven to bake. The smell of delicious brownies soon filled the room and traveled outside.
"Mmm, where is that scrumptious smell coming from?" asked one lady.
The neighbors walked toward Hank's house and went inside. "Hank, did you bake those brownies?" they asked.
"Yes," Hank said gloomily, as he shared the brownies.
The next day, Hank got many calls from people wanting to order his brownies. Soon, even the two restaurants that had fired him called and placed orders. Hank formed a company--Hank's Brownies Inc.--to meet the huge demand. He even got an order from the president, Kenning Dwyer.
Because Hank never gave up, he discovered his unique skill in making brownies. Hard work, dedication, and passion had led Hank to success.
