Story Contest: A Magical Talent
Summer Philippe was not normal. She had a strange ability to fill up clear glasses with liquid when they were empty, often getting her brothers into trouble. She was eleven years old and had two older brothers, Hill and Simon.
One night at dinner, when Hill was finishing up his milk, Summer discovered her talent. She was staring intently at his glass, hoping it would fill up, and boom, before you can say jackdidleyhoohoo, it was full to the brim. Then Hill asked to be excused from the table.
"Can I be excused?" Hill asked.
"Drink your milk, young man," Mrs. Philippe said.
"But I already drank it," Hill whined.
"Don't you play games, Hill," said Mrs. Philippe. "Drink your milk." Hill looked at his glass, astonished. It was full! All this Summer watched with increasing interest.
"Mommy," Summer drew out the word. "Can I please go read? I finished my homework."
"Yeah, sweetie," Mrs. Philippe said. Summer raced off, gleefully analyzing what had just happened.
Summer slid into her favorite chair. It was an overstuffed wingback chair. She picked up her worn copy of Maximum Ride: The Final Warning and opened it.
She tried to read, but she couldn't concentrate. She kept thinking back to dinner and how she had filled up Hill's glass. After everyone had gone to bed, Summer crept downstairs, pulled out a glass. She filled it with water and drank. When all the water was gone, she stared intently at the glass. It filled right up!
Evidently, Summer played this trick on her brothers many times, never getting in trouble, but one day her mother figured it out. Mrs. Philippe had made Summer, Hill, and Simon lunch, and they were all sitting at the table. Simon had just finished his orange juice and was getting up when Summer realized that his glass wasn't full. Hers was! Her mom was sneakily looking at her glass, hoping the trick had worked, and it had. Her mother had switched the glasses!
And that is how Summer Philippe got her talent. This still happens, so be on the lookout for your special talent.
