Story Contest: A Magical Talent

Submitted by: Amber M., age 12, Grant, MI

It was one cold day in New York City as Selena walked the streets. She was sipping her cup of Tazo tea from Starbucks and enjoying it. It had rained a while ago, and she was trying her best to keep her zebra-striped Converse shoes from getting soaked in the puddles.

She soon came across an old man, dressed in clothes of rags and clutching his walking stick. He looked as if no sleep had settled upon him in a long time, and in his hands was an old, slightly cracked coffee mug that held a few dirty pennies. To Selena, it was clear that he was homeless and begging. In her heart, she seemed to have a weird feeling.

She smiled at the man and bent down to put one of her crisp five dollar bills into his cup. His frown turned into a smile, and he thanked Selena before happily getting up and walking away.

Selena continued along the streets, enjoying her tea and stopping to windo- shop at displays. In front of her was a woman who looked liked she was in her late thirties. She was crying and wiping her tears into the sleeves of her blue sweatshirt. Selena stat down next to the woman and asked her how she was doing. The lady soon told Selena that her daughter had died of leukemia.

"It's O.K.; you'll see her in heaven anyway. God's holding her safely in his arms until you get there," Selena said calmly.

The lady stopped crying and looked Selena in the eye. "Thank you. I never thought about it that way before," she said, getting up in a positive mood and walking joyously away.

Selena smiled. She had discovered her talent. She could turn people's sadness into happiness and spread love around the world. She never knew how big a part she could play in the world by doing so little, but now she did. All she needed to do was say a few things and help the hurting. Selena then went home with a way to change the world!
