Magic Mariachi

Mariachi was a beautiful Thoroughbred horse. She was black with a white spot on her back that was shaped like a heart. It was impossible to see the heart because it was hidden under her saddle. Marina Callavan was Mariachi’s jockey. Marina had a long, flowing blond braid that reached the back of her knees and beautiful dark-blue eyes that sparkled like sapphires in the summer moonlight.

Mariachi’s first race was on a hot summer day. The sun was shining like a single diamond in the sky. The ladies in their fancy dresses and glorious hats all came, hoping to see Mariachi stand in the winner’s circle.

Mariachi was scheduled to run in the tenth race By the time Mariachi and Marina got to the starting gate, Mariachi was trembling with excitement.

“On your mark, get set, go!” yelled the starter.

The horses galloped as fast as they could toward the finish line. Suddenly, Mariachi felt a little peculiar. Something was shooting out of her back! Just then, wings popped out from the white heart on her back, and Mariachi soared toward the sun. Marina screamed with excitement as they flew around the track toward the finish line.

Marina and Mariachi flew so fast that Marina’s hair looked like a streak of lightning. Soon, they were a few lengths away from the finish line. Suddenly another horse, American Angel, caught up to Mariachi. Mariachi picked up her speed and galloped toward the finish line. Again, American Angel caught up to Mariachi. They were in a dead heat.

Suddenly Marina dropped her riding crop, and Mariachi slowed down. Marina thought fast. Using her braid as a crop, Marina urged Mariachi to go faster. Finally, Mariachi crossed the finish line.

“Mariachi has won the race!” the caller announced.

Mariachi and Marina were escorted to the winner’s circle where they received a large trophy.

The next day, Marina and Mariachi saw the newspaper. On the front cover the headline read, “Magical Mariachi Wins the Season’s Race!” That night Mariachi was the happiest horse in the entire world.
