This book is about a girl named Leisel Meminger who is obviously The Book Thief. The story is told by Death. It takes place in Germany during WWII. Leisel is put with a foster family in a town outside Munich to keep her safe during the war. The first time Death sees Leisel is on the train ride to her new family with her mother and brother. Her brother dies while on the train and at his very burial Leisel steals her first book, The Grave Digger's Handbook. Though she cannot read, her longing to overcomes the irony of the situation.
