anonymousGuestSo I’m taking an AP Bio class, and I just got into the second semester and now, for some reason, my teacher is terrible; she assigns me work several days after it’s due, assigns questions or topics that we never covered in class or in the reading, generally assigns too much work. I’ve tried to ask my mom to let me either drop the class or switch it to an Honors Biology class which covers the same topics but doesn’t have an AP test and is with a differrent teacher. She’s resistant to both ideas, saying that I am “so close to the finish line” (she uses this so many times) and almost always puts it on me, saying that I can’t just not do the assignment, even though it is physically impossible (again, stuff that was not covered) and trying to use my kind-of good grade in the class (87%) against me. What on earth am I supposed to do?

AmethystGuest*hugs* <3By all means change classes – that teacher sounds terrible. You’ve probably already done this, but make sure to explain to your mom exactly why it’s impossible to learn properly in the class; if what she cares about is grades, you could remind her that, through no fault of your own, you probably won’t and can’t get good grades in this class. Whether or not that convinces her, don’t let her argument of grades get to you – I’m sure she cares about your education, but true learning and understanding are far more important than numbers.
If there’s absolutely no way to get out of the class, you could ask a parent or someone else to help you cover the subjects that your teacher expects you to know – it looks like outside help would be very important. And if you have to, keep an open mind and try to get the most you can out of the class; it probably won’t be much, but there’s (hopefully) at least some good to be gotten out of every situation, whatever it is. Also, having never gone to a school myself, I don’t know how practicable this would be, but maybe you could talk to school authorities about this? Assigning homework after it’s due and failing to teach the proper subjects sounds really serious.
At any rate, tons of sympathy and support and positivitea – it sounds really rough, and I hope you can figure it out <33

SeadragonGuestDo you have a counselor who could a) help you talk to your mom or b) work with the teacher on the matter, like Amethyst suggested about school authorities? I have not yet entered the realm of high school (it sounds like you’re in high school) but maybe this could help.
