SKI LODGE
The sky booms, flashing purple thunder. A storm outside- a bad one, by the looks of it.
But, wrapped in her thick, fluffy blankets, you were safe.
The clock ticks by, as you flip the pages, one by one. Your face is lit only by the burning candle nearby. The room smells strongly of a peach-scented breeze.
The clock strikes one, a single gong that echoes throughout the building. Your eyes are drooping, slowly. The fireplace occasionally lets out a pop or a crackle, the scarlet rug more orange than red.
But then, something happens. Something out of the ordinary.
A breeze extinguishes the fire, leaving a thick scent of smoke, disguising the soft scents of peaches on a summer night. Your eyes snap wide open. Eventually, you fall into a restless sleep… but not for long. Never for long.
The clock strikes two, two gongs that echo throughout the building. You wake with a start, eyes glancing around the room, alert.
The window slides with a screech, revealing an inky black raven, disguised against the midnight black sky. It offers a grey scaly leg, deathly sharp talons extended. Tied to the leg with a violet ribbon that seems to shimmer softly in the moonlight is a cream-coloured scroll.
Your fingers reach out as you untie the ribbon. As you loosen the final knot, there is a hawk’s caw in the distance- a strange thing to hear so early in the morning. You yank off the ribbon. The scroll comes tumbling down with it.
Three gongs echo throughout the building.
