The Last Apprentice series

by Joseph Delaney

These are a great series for anyone who enjoys those "non-Catholic" books about fantasy. They are about a thirteen-year-old boy, Thomas Ward, a seventh son of a seventh son, who enters into an apprenticeship for the local Spook, who thwarts witches and drives away boggarts. He soon embarks on hair-raising missions as he prepares to someday bcome a spook as well to help his land fight the dark. During the course of these books, he meets Alice, a girl raised as a witch (I hope they fall in love), and begins to find out things he never even knew about his master, his own mother, and even himself. In the face of darkness and death, Tom strives to stay pure and good while overcoming evils and demons he never dreamed could possibly exist. A wonderful series about staying true to yourself while straining to help others and striding confidently onto the path of growing up and overcoming the demons inside of yourself, not to mention deliciously scary.

They're good books. Not the *best* writing out there but the plot is very interesting and the characters are three-dimensional. The books aren't as creepy as they are advertised to be but if you like monsters and a refreshingly fascinating take on the supernatural (like me!) you'll probably love them.
