The Silver Sword

by Ian Serraillier

The Silver Sword is a fun, touching story about three siblings' journey to find their parents after they are separated in Poland during World War II. Although the style of the author isn't very lively, the plot is interesting and strong, with many twists of fate intervening to help or block the main characters. The protagonists themselves are very human and have deep, complex characters. One of these is Jan, a boy who joins the three siblings and who learns over the course of the tale that people are more important than animals or possessions and that kindness is better than selfishness. I would recommend this book for around ages 11-15.
