I swam along with the kids. They seemed innocent — I assumed none of them knew what I had been up to last night. They seemed to be struggling, I noticed, and often slowed to help the others. I didn't want to wait for them, and besides, I would need my privacy, and those kids would want us to all stick together, I could tell it already. It was obvious from the way they already stuck close like friends. I slipped underwater and pushed myself through the raging waters, then dragged myself onto the beach downshore from where the others are heading too. I sit down with my back to some tall rocks and evaluate the sitaution quickly. Soon the corporation will figure out that the target still lives. And I'm not going to be able to contact them. No contact and not obeying their wishes; they'll take it as a rebellion. They'll kill Elle. I need to get out of here, and fast. The ship is long past repair; I'll need to search the island for boat-making materials and supplies. The island has a long stripe of sand winding around it, with a cluster of rocks to the south. Past the sand is a jungle. I can find food and wood in the jungle. I start into the jungle.

KatydidParticipantThomas~
I sit up with a start and take in my surroundings. Oh yeah…I'm shipwrecked…I think and plop back on the sand. My clothes are dry and the rainclouds departed, letting the sun shine, so i must have slept a while. I look at the girl next to me and sit up as I realize she is still breathing. What about the others? I stand up with a groan and spot out the other bodies. With tremendous effort I walk over to each one and wake them up. We all gather next to half-dead girl. "We need to get out of this sun…"
"And build shelter…" One girl adds.
"And find food." Another boy adds.
"All of that…" I say, "But lets go into the jungle and find a nice spot for a shelter."
"What about her?" Someone asks, pointing to the girl.
"She's alive, I'll carry her." And with that I pick her up in my arms, and we start our hike.

I follow the pack in silence, scanning the forest for my mother. She has to be here. She can't not be here. But I stay silent, don't call for her, can't form the words in my throat.
Some of the others find fallen tree branches, but no one knows quite what to do with them.
"We could build a lean-to," suggests a girl. "Shipwrecked: The essential guide shows how."
"Nothing we could lean a lean-to against. The trees are too skinny and everything else is sand," a boy speaks up, shaking his head.
"I have an idea," I say quietly, rembering Theodore Emerson's adventures on the island. I lead evryone to a good spot in the sand, where we stick four branches deep into the ground. Using mud, we attach four more branches in a square on top, then fill it in with yet more branches and leaves. Then we step back to admire our handiwork, and the boy from before gives a nod of approval.
-
KatydidParticipantThomas~
"Hmm.." I say while laying down the girl in the shade. "Well… Does someone want to make the hit water proof and stay with the girl?"
A couple girls raise their hands. "Okay then. The rest of should probably find food…I think?"
"Yeah…" they respond.
"Well then I think we got this down!!" I exclaim with a half-hearted grin. It's seems to work though because I receive a few smiles in return.
Angel~
I sit in the hut with a couple other girls. We patched it up mostly, so it should be good for now. It's not too big, we will work on that later. I look at the half-dead girl, (buggies charrie) she almost drowned, so i guess she has an excuse to sleep.

The ship was going down, what we going to do? "Mom, this way!" I grasp on to her as we head to the life boats. My heart is in my thoat, and fear is all that I feel. "Lisa, I can't do it," my mom said as the boat tipped sideways. My mom had a lame leg, and she was limping agains the hard wind and rain. "Come on!" I pull her to the lifeboats, clinging to my life vest. I try to buckle the darn thing with one hand. The captain was helping my mom into the boat when my eyes wandered upward. "Mo-!" A huge wave washes over me, dragging me off the boat. I started screaming, but my lungs filled with air. Dread overcame me as my life vest slipped off my chest. It caught onto my foot, plunging my body upside down. I struggle to free myself, but I can't paddle. I was growing weak. Water attacks my body, from the outside and in. I love you Mom, I hope you can find a worthy man for you. My eyelids shutter, as my strength ebbs. A dark feeling of calm washed over my body. I fell into a deep sleep, as I felt a firm hand grab my collar. Then nothing.
-
Rose budParticipantSamuel~
I paddle hard with my last strength, pushing myself forward.
"Thank-" I begin, but the other boy shakes his head.
"Kick. Talk later." We work until my arms and legs ache, but there is nothing but water. After a few minutues, the other boy speaks.
"Land," he says, and I kick harder. I can see it now; a white beach stretching out in front of us. We splash and paddle our hardest, me floating on my barrel, and the boy clinging to some driftwood. Finally, I slid off my barrel and onto the sand.
"We made it!" I say in surprise.
"Yes, now to look for other survivors."
"My name is Samuel, thank you for saving my life!"
"You are quite welcome. I am Jeremy Lee," the older boy informs me. I unwrap the blanket still sticking to my wet skin, and begin to roll the water barrel. Jeremy Lee carries his piece of driftwood. I can see a shape of some sort on the beach, and we run towards it. It is a small shelter made from various pieces of the ship and other supplies. I roll the water barrel next to it, and set the blanket on top. Jeremy Lee and I peep in inside, seeing several other people.
Sorry that's not exactly descriptive or anything. It is almost 9:20 and I am winding down.
-
DanieParticipantMaddy~
"Hello!" I smile happily at them. "Now, I would like to know all of your names."
"Thomas," one boy replies.
"Angel." The girl brushes her hair off her face.
"Samuel," says the boy who just came in.
"Jeremy Lee," another who just came in.
"Maya," who seemed very shy."
"Christopher." one the last one.
"And I'm Maddy!" I welcome.
"Is that fake cheeriness or what?" asks Angel with a sarcastic tint.
"Nope! I'm sorta known for being cheerful." I smile again.

I find a grove of trees that are very close together. I find a stream and some wire in the bottom of the stream. I fill the spaces between the trees with mud and then make a hole to crawl through. I weave a door out of palm leaves and use the wire to make hinges and a lock of sorts. I wash the mud off my hands and face and then go looking for food and other things I could use. I find an apple tree near me and a nest of eggs. I gather all the eggs and one apple. I make a fireplace in front of my hut and light a fire with a match I found in the my pocket. I place the eggs in the embers to cook them and then work cooking them for a while. When they're cooked, I douse the fire and make a bag out of palm leaves to hold my food. I put the eggs in it and then leave the apple out on a leaf to dry. I eat an egg as I go looking for a stone to make a knife with. When I do find the stone, I sharpen it with my swiss army knife. Then I put it away and go to bed as it's night already.

While we introduce ourselves I keep glancing at Samuel. Do I have a friend? I'm tired, to put it lightly, all the energy drained from me. He looks weary too. Thomas suggested we search for food, and asks who will stay. Maya, Maddy, and Angel raise their hands. "Good,"he said," we'll be back soon, work on the shelter." Then he begins giving out orders like a Army general. I don't take this as a bad thing, we need a leader. He will have to be humble somtimes though, I think, we all will. My job is to find water. Since we have so few boys, we don't pair up.

BuggyParticipantLisa~
My eyes fluttered open. Stars filled the open sky creating a painting worhty of kings. I sat up quickly, then had to lay down again. Sitting up to fast made my head spin. I get up again, but this time slower. I look around, people were dotted across the sand in slumber. "Your awake!" I jump at the startling voice. I turn around to see a girl with pale blue eyes, and bouncy blonde curls. "Hi, I'm Maddy." She waves, and I wave back. "Hi Maddy, I'm Lisa." "Well Lisa, welcome to our island." I look around, but I'm still confused. "Maddy did we make it to our cruise destination?" She looks at me for a minute. "No, Lisa, the Raven sunk. Remember?" My mind flashed back to where my hand slipped away from my mothers. "Oh, yeah." I had to hold hope. "Don't worry, we'll get back somehow!" I looked at Maddy. Just looking at her smile made me grin from ear to ear. "Maddy I think you and I are going to be great friends." We laughed, but then we were intupted. A wolf's howl echoed fairly close to us. Then everbody shot up, hair standing on end.
-
KatydidParticipantThomas~
I plunge my knife into the wolf, its howling driving me bonkers. I squeeze my eyes close in disgust. The howl dies down to a whimper, then nothing. I take a deep breath and turn away coughing, Ooo, it stinks, bad idea. I stand up and cover my mouth with my sleeve, only to pull it back down and spit blood from my mouth. "Aww come on!! I ruined my sleeve!!" I look down at it, not only is it blood-stained but so is my hand. "Just great…So I killed it, who wants to carry it?"
"I will," Sam volunteers. We gut it, skin it, and he picks it up. "Oof…maybe a little help?" Christopher picks up the back half of the wolf with a grunt and we head back to camp.
We arrive layden with wolf and some fruit we gathered along the way. "Ladies!!!" Jeremy Lee callse, "we got wolf!!"
A couple of them squeal and hurry out of the tent, followed by less enthusiatic ones, but they all scrunch up their noses at the sight. "We saved the fur for a carpet," I chuckle with a grin.
"No!!" Maddy squeals with laughing.
"Don't you worry, we will be cleanin' it first."
They all let out a sigh of relief and us boys set to work. We skin it and I head to the ocean to wash it. There is this one odd peice of fur, so I cut it off. "Wait…." I drop the bloody fur and take out my knife. I remove the fur from the smaller piece and see a small peice of leather. "To hold water!!"
With that, I pick up the fur and continue to the shore.
Angel~
I'm glad the wolf is dead. But it smelled wretched!!!
Thomas left to clean the skin and I descibed to Lisa our situation. "Let's make the hut bigger. Maybe another room? For the boys?" All the girls agreed and we set to work. The boys were tired so they slept while we worked. Finally, we finished.
"I have a great idea," Maddy says with a grin. "Lets decorate the boys' room."
"Decorate?" Lisa asks.
Maddy picks a flower and set it inside, "Decorate." We all smile and silently set to work, 'decorating' the boys room.
"All set," I say, looking at our work with admiration. "They get a flower carpet and we get the fur."
-
DanieParticipantMaddy~
I smile at the work.
"Well done girls," I smile, and, I think it's pretty much hard not to, they smile back. We go back to our own little hut, and go to sleep.
I feel Lisa next to me. She's nice, and… Like me. I smile to myself and fall asleep.
A pain screeches through me, and I wake up. A wolf.
It makes sense. They hunt in packs. But I don't fight. I hope. I hope for others. Grabbing what I could first find, a rock, I throw it at it and scream.
Lisa wakes up, and so does Angel.
"Why did you wake us up, stu-" Angel stops, and then joins me at throwing rocks at it. Finally, Lisa makes the final kill and it falls to the ground.
"We killed it!" I gasp, but still a cheeriness in my voice.
"Yeah, but there will be more comin'," Angel replies.
"At least we killed this one!" Lisa laughs.

All these people, laughing, talking, grieving, introducing themselves. All kids. All trapped on this forsaken island where we will have to stay forever.
When some of the others leave, I leave too. I'm supposed to be with them, but I'll be back later. Besides, we need someone who has a good grasp of the island. Remembering and mapping out, that's my specialty.
I find a few mango trees, coconut trees, a few banana trees, and it's obvious there are wild animals here too. I also find a small waterfall that I take a few drinks of- Shipwrecked- The Essential Guide says that watefall water is fine to drink.
When the sun starts to set, I head back, the island well sketched out in my mind and a bit of each fruit carried along.
-
IndigoParticipant~Ashley~
That next morning I search around a little bit and find some coconut trees. I crack them open and put the coconut milk in a bottle I found on the beach. I cook the meat and has I do so, I start scratching out a plan for a boat. A raft with two long sticks and a sack will work for the younger ones, but I'M making a boat. I'm thinking a row boat- of sorts. I go searching around the island some more and find a strange plant that repels water. I collect a good deal of it. I then start looking for some way to get hard, sturdy, shapable wood.

Rose bud/SamuelParticipant~Queen Elizabeth, I just realized that we are using two of my brother's names 🙂
Samuel~
When night arrives, I volunteer to sleep outside the hut. It is so small that not everyone can fit inside. Jeremy Lee is keeping guard with Thomas (This makes me think of the "Making Camp" paragraphs in a ski lodge), and I curl up in the damp sand, wrapping the still-wet blanket around me. I am so cold that I have trouble falling asleep, but finally, I drift away. I wake up in the middle of the night, shivering. The guards must have switched during the night; Cristopher is nearly asleep beside me, his head against the wall of our hut. I can just make out Maya a little way down the sand, tracing her fingers in the sand. I am so cold, and the wet blanket isn't helping.
"Maya!" I whisper, kicking off the blanket and shivering. Maya looks startled, her brown eyes flashing around. I crawl on my elbows towards her. I feel cold, sandy, salty and wet all over. The waves washing onto shore feel so calming and alive. As I sit by her, she says nothing. Her brown hair floats on a light breeze, and she stares at the ocean. I sit too, listening, looking. All the sudden I feel the tears burst from my eyes and flow down my cheeks. Mama, Papa, Jean Anne, Francis, Ruby… They are gone. You are alone. I cough, and taste more seawater. Maya looks uncertain, but then she points toward something way out in the sea. For a moment, all I can do is sob before I understand what she is pointing towards. It is a wispy cloud with a pinkish-orange color.
"Look, the sun is rising," she says very softly. My breath is wobbly as I slow my crying.
"I-I… It is going to be a beautiful sunrise," I murmer, slowly crawling back to the hut. I curl up beside Christopher, and lay there until morning.

I crack my eyes open, it's morning. Early morning though. Things were happening so fast, yet so slow. Considering it had only been one day, though it felt like a thousand years. I look at the sleeping lumps still in the hut. Jermey Lee, Thomas, Angel, and Maddy. I debated going back to sleep, though I know I couldn't. I would just just toss and turn and wake everybody else up. I stretch and tiptoe outside. Cristohper is against the hut keeping gaurd, then Maya, and Samuel were watching the gorgeous sunset. I start to walk along the beach for a bit, until I noticed my shoes. I laugh, "Your just like me, huh?" I take it off and race back to the hut. I place it down near the opening. "So what are the plans for today Cristopher?" When no reply came, I chuckled. He must have fallen asleep. I tuned back to the Samuel. I noticed him shivering, like the Engizerbunny. We are going to need more rooms. So I decide to go get material for a new hut, we were going to need it. Why start late, when you can start early? I knew where they got the material, because I helped a little bit yesterday. With one final stretch, I headed to go get some material.
-
KatydidParticipantThomas~
I open my eyes but quickly shut them again from the sudden light. After a few minutes of rapid blinking my eyes finally adjust. I sit up quietly and make my way through the maze of bodies, my feet landing on delicate flowers. I exit out onto the cool, soft sand and dig my toes into it. I stare at the gorgeous sunset for a bit then start jogging. I used to jog every morning back home.I even jogged on the ship!
I stare up at the big tree with a grin. I found a much better home for us!! All i'd have to do was make a way to get up of some sort. The large canopy would mostly provide protection from the rain and we could sleep on the large branches. "Hmm…" I pull out my hunting knife and carve into the tree. The bark is suprisingly thick, so when i cut a peice off it makes a perfect step. I grin and run back to camp to tell the others.
