PoinsettiaGuestThere are so many books I want to read but I haven’t been able to go the library so they are as yet just a pleasant dream… But it’s still so nice to have a list of books that I’m looking forward to reading. I’ve been looking online for new books to read, and I came across this book called Proto: How One Ancient Language Went Global – it’s about how an ancient language called Proto-Indo-European influenced a huge amount of different languages. Like apparently the word for “daughter” is nearly the same in English, Sanskrit, Lithuanian and Armenian, which is amazing because they usually seem like really different languages. It just sounds really interesting. And then there’s a memoir called Ordinary Time, by Annie B. Jones – I really enjoy memoirs – and The Crescent Moon Tearoom, which is a novel.
Alas, there are some books which I have already read and I would like to talk about them but I think some of their content is not appropriate for younger CBers, so I won’t bring them up by name. Suffice it to say (goodness, when did my writing style get so Victorian?) that one of them was about the passengers on a train, and how their lives and interactions weave together as they journey along. It was so technically well-done. It was light and interesting, which is difficult to do with such a limited setting, and the different characters’ lives intersected in a really believable but unexpected way. I enjoyed it. And I also read the memoirs of a modern queen… To judge from the book, she was well-educated and interesting, and she had a lot to say about her work as a more progressive monarch, as well as the personal implications of being part of a royal family (she married into the royal family rather than being born a princess). She also provided perspective on politics. It was super interesting…

Climate beeGuestI’m reading THE UNWANTEDS: ISLAND OF FIRE. It’s dystopian fantasy, but it’s not too depressing.
It’s the third book in the series. I really like it. The basic plot is there’s this magic city called Artimé, where creativity is celebrated and anything is possible. It shares an island with Quill, where the opposite is true. I recommend it.-
vice.verses.virtueGuestoodles!
lost to the sands of timeoh my gosh, i loved the unwanteds! my “ex” (long story) recommended it to me in early 2025; i went on quite the reading rampage (i think i read the first five books in a week). it has a very unique plot.
speaking of the unwanteds, i have to finish the sixth book–i never got around to it since he turned out to be a jerk and i lost interest in the series, but i’ll come back to it eventually.

lost to the sands of timei’m currently reading crime and punishment! i was reading fahrenheit 451 and animal farm, but i have a habit of putting things down when i get halfway through them to start new things. i’m trying my best to stick with crime and punishment, though–i figure i’ll be too engaged when i get halfway through it since it’s such a large book (it’s the largest book i’ve read in a while).

ThalorwinGuestCool!! I’m reading I think book 5 for Pegasus. I think it’s called Rise of the Titans. Only 3 chapters in though…… I highly recommend the series! It’s by Kate O’hearn btw…

LyricGuesthappy kind of tiredI read The Chosen by Chaim Potok recently. It’s about two Jewish American boys during and after WWII and their struggle with Hasidic traditions and culture basically. I couldn’t put it down–there was not a lot of action but I needed to know what was going to happen to the main characters (well it’s mostly about one boy, the narrator is kind of a spectator), and idk, the book just immersed me into their world really well. There’s a lot about Hasidic culture and history and I found that fascinating because I just never knew about it
I realized I really want to read more books about all different kinds of cultures and ethnic groups. So probably historical fiction and period pieces and maybe auto/biographies and of course poetry.

AdminModeratorI’ve read The Chosen, too, and loved it. Chaim Potok has also written other great books.
