Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
"Two magicians s...

"Two magicians shall appear in England.
The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me;
The first shall be governed by thieves and murderers; the second shall conspire at his own destruction;
The first shall bury his heart in a dark wood, yet still feel its ache;
The second shall see his dearest possession in his enemies hand;
The first shall pass his life alone; he shall be his own gaoler;
The second shall tread the lonely roads, the storm above his head, seeking the dark tower on a high hillside..."

Yes, it is the Best Book. I am reading it for the fourth time, and it is WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL. Read it, and then come talk about it here.

And now, more poetry (yay poetry!):

"Not long, not long my father said
Not long shall you be ours.
The Raven King knows all too well
Which are the fairest flowers

The priest was all too worldly
Though he prayed and rang his bell
The Raven King three candles lit
The priest said all was well

Her arms were all too feeble
Though she claimed to love me so
The Raven King stretched out his hand
She sighed and let me go

This land is all too shallow
It is painted on the sky
And trembles like the wind-shook rain
When the Raven King goes by

For always and for always
I pray remember me
Upon the moors, beneath the stars
With the King's wild company"

Anyway, there must be something to say besides poetry. Oh yes!

Being the completely fanatic girl that I am, I used my newfound Tarot skills (actually I'm not very good at it) (actually I'm pretty bad at it) to interpret Childermass's fortune as is laid out in Chapter 21, The cards of Marseilles. I can't really remember what it was, but I got a vague impression of his family dying or something.

And then there are pineapples. The ale-house is The Pineapple, as well as Strange seeing pineapples towards the end.

So. Read it, my friends/acquaintances/complete strangers.

I've been meaning to read this book, because you guys are raving about it so much and then I would at least know what you were talking about. =P

Maybe I'll request it from the library.

Hey Alice!

I've finally finished the book! it was great--at times, a bit confusing, but it was very descriptive, had a lot of imagination. It was awesomly great! Thanks!

Alice, while I think your obsession is just a mite unhealthy, it is an excellent book. Certainly good enough to warrant obsession.

Read it, people! And don't be put off by its size.
