Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Diana Role-play #1
Here we go,...

Here we go, folks! The Diana Wynne Jones role-play! Who wants to start? I don't think we should do actual characters from the books, and as Jenni said, it doesn't have to be any one book.

((That all sounds great! Okeydokey. Here goes.))

My laughter froze on my lips as the side door crashed open and Myrella, Howl's apprentice ((Holly, how old is Myrella?)) burst in. Her face was pale and she was soaking wet, even though the day outside was still clear and fair. She gasped something I couldn't catch and collapsed on the floor. "Myrella!" I shouted, but in my mad dash to her side I was intercepted by stern-looking people dressed in comforting colors. They told me that they had to see to her first. Reluctantly, I nodded. Loreli appeared at my side. "Who's that?" She asked, "Howl's apprentice, Myrella." I felt my throat closing in hysteria, but managed to choke out; "he wouldn't have sent her if he wasn't in trouble! Something's wrong!" The last word came out a little squeak, but Loreli nodded. She motioned to the two men--the older almost magically no longer looking silly in his peacock robe. I found that Lettie had appeared at my other side, watching everything with wide eyes, but to my relief (I couldn't handle anyone's hysteria but my own right now) she seemed almost comfortable in the strange, plush surroundings. Vaguely, I heard Loreli explain to the two men who Myrella was, but mostly I was staring at the mirror in front of me, caught once again in the spell that seemed to bind Loreli and me together in our likeness. Only when a young woman, who I didn't remember being in the greeting party, snapped her fingers in front of my nose did I come back to myself. "I asked you, does Howl have any enemies that you know of?" At which I almost burst out laughing again. "How can he not?" I asked, "He's currently the most powerful male magic-user in my world!" "Wait a moment." The peacock-man said, rubbing the bridge of his nose, "it might not be for Howl himself that he was--er, mage-napped. Think about it. The only thing that has changed is that we have brought Loreli and Philippa together. Someone may not wish it." At several blank looks, he went reluctantly into more depth: "apart, these two girls are simply powerful enchantresses, who happen to have a few more lives than the average person--a cat wouldn't find it unusual. But together--now there is the thing. Together, they are as powerful as I, or Millie, Cat or Marianne are. Maybe more so, since they are a bit younger." He had an ironic twist to his mouth at the words "a bit." "But we can talk and eat at the same time, and as far as I know, this Myrella person is still unconscious. Lettie, shall we?" He offered his arm to Lettie, and everyone walked briskly down the hall to where a delicious-looking lunch was layed.

((Page 247, and Myrella is 13...)

As Myrella slowly slipped into full conciusness(she wasn't fully concius at the time) she began to tell her story again, in full detail."Well," she began, "it all started when Howl was teaching me about-er, magic , in the courtyard, suddenly the sky went dark, as Howl transformed into, well, a little boy by the name of Twinkle. Then this, shadow thing came on him, and he tried to get out with magic, and it didn't work. This all happened in a matter of seconds. He threw me a scroll he had in his pocket for emergencies, and suddenly a loud voice spoke out." She was already crying again, almost as much as Pippa, though Myrella added more of 'Howl' characteristic when doing so.((I mean dramatic.)) "It said something like, 'I have waited too long for this, Howl Pendragon. But now you will pay for your little girl,'or something like that. The bubble disappeared, and Howl with it, saying,'Find Chrestomanci! You'll be safe with him!' And he was gone..." She sunk into a state of depression, and started to slime(see Howl's Moving Castle)...

(Oh, did I mention that Myrella is like a female, mini form of Howl? Physically and mentally, and spiritually(as in magic)...)

As the Chrestomancis were interviewing Myrella, I listened with interest. When they came to the conclusion that it might be about me and Philippa instead of just Howl himself, my mother interrupted suddenly. "I remember now!" she exclaimed out of the blue. We all looked at her quizzically. She continued, turning to my Uncle Joe, the Chief Mechanic as she spoke. "THe Pinhoes and Farleighs have a prophecy. It goes," She went into a trancelike singsongy voice as she spoke the prophecy, and Joe joined her after the first sentence or so. The main part was: "There will come two of a kind, fair and dark, who will wield the powers of the gods themselves. They will save the worlds from darkness. " etc etc. Everybody looked at Philippa and I. My father murmured curiously, "Two of a kind, one fair, which could mean Philippa, and one dark, which could be Lori. I don't know about the power-of-the-gods part, though." I looked at Philippa. Her face looked frantic. "This can't be us," she whispered, at which I shook my head. The more I thought about it, the more sense it made. I looked at my father, pleading for reassurance, and he said quietly, "Lori, it's more than likely." Just then, the dinner bells rang and the rest of the Family poured in. I groaned as Mr Saunders came in. He had arrived early back from France, and I was betting he would be talking about Art and Music and Culture as usual. I sat down and blanked out for the rest of the evening, nodding when somebody spoke to me directly and picking at my food at various intervals so my parents would think I was eating. I couldn't be in a prophecy. Could I?

((Don't worry, Jenni, if you hadn't been the one to introduce a prophecy including twins, I would have. This works out perfectly!!!))

For some reason, I have always had an aversion to prophecies. Maybe it's because I'm strong-willed (I hope) and don't like the feeling of having my future planned. But Howl (I bit my lip and tryed not to think about him) had taught me how to tell a real prophecy from the sort of prophecy a con-man on the street would give passers-by for a price. This was undoubtably real. From the blank, brooding look that Loreli wore, she didn't like one bit, either. Perhaps we really were twins, even though her hair was darker and eyes stormier. I got through dinner as quickly as possible, horrified at the idea of spilling gravy on the beautiful dress that Loreli had given me. In order not to spill anything, the only thing I ate was some sort of fruit-thing that, whatever it was, was not in my world. The conversation washed over me like ocean waves, and I no more payed attention to it than the glowering cat on the windowseat. Loreli asked to be excused a minute or two after a a dessert was served that I didn't recognize (it was white and freezing cold, and the people called it something like iced cream), and I stood with her. Together, we escaped to the halls of the magnificent castle. I didn't see whether or not Lettie and Myrella came ((that way if you guys want to come, you can)). "Come up to our room. I want to see if you can come with me...somewhere." Loreli said mysteriously.

I went up the stairs and into the complicated maze of hallways, speeding through and turning every once in a while. Finally, we got to our room, and I changed into my Place Between/Mythosphere clothes, jeans and a t-shirt. I tossed Philippa my spare set, and headed for the corner, with Philippa following curiously. I could feel her trying to prepare for the impact, and her shock as we, instead of hitting the wall, ended up in the Mythosphere, which Uncle Christopher called the Place Between. I grinned at her confused look. "I've been here before, with your father!" she said. "Yeah, I suppose you were. But I don't think you've met the inhabitants?" I shot down a narrow, craggy valley that led to the heart of the mythosphere, which, although I had found it nearly as soon as I started exploring the mythosphere, neither Chrestomanci could even seem to see it when I tried to show it to them. I pulled her through a seemingly solid rock surface, and we emerged into a flowery field. I walked to the center and called quietly, "Hayley? Troy? Harmony?" They had been the first of the many true inhabitants of the mythosphere that I had met, and I could never remember the rest anyway. Troy was, as usual, the first to appear out of the woods on the other side of the field. He grinned when he saw me and Philippa. "So, you decided to keep your promise and introduce your twin to us, huh?", he teased, as we both knew that I nearly always kept my promises. "Troy, we both know that I keep my promises. But for that, you will have to wait to be introduced to her untill the others come.", I said defiantly. He pretended to pout. Just then, Harmony and Hayley came out of the woods too. I laughed at Troy's fake relieved expression, then hugged Hayley. She was outwardly the same age as Philippa and I, and she was like a sister to me. I went back into formal mode. "Hayley, Harmony, Troy, this is my twin Philippa, Philippa, these are Hayley, Troy, and Harmony. They're gods, although Troy never acts like it." Harmony said in her soft, melodic voice, "Nice to meet you, Philippa. We've been waiting for you two for a long, long, time." I looked at her quizzically. Was she referring to that prophecy again? Hayley added, "Yes, and Loreli, don't pick on Troy, he's much nicer than Tollie, and we all know it. Troy added to that, "Nice to meet you. Ever heard of the great city of Troy? I'm the one that built it, you know." The other two glared at him. I giggled, and looked at Philippa to see what she thought.

((Yeah, I was going to stick our power characters with a prophecy. It's sort of hard to resist, you know?))

Despite all of Howl's teachings, Pippa had to admit she had never gone through solid stone before. It was a rather novel experience. Not to mention meeting gods. The boy, Troy, said, "have you ever heard of the city of Troy? I built it." This seemed to mean a lot to him, but I told him the truth: that I'd never heard a word about the city of Troy. He looked a little disappointed, but not too surprised. "Oh well..." he said. I thought for a moment he was going to add "nobody's perfect" to the end of the sentence, but he didn't. For a moment, I forgot all about the prophecy and Howl's disappearance. It almost became commonplace that I was in yet another world--well, not quite.

((Heehee, yeah, it IS hard to resist.))

I laughed at Troy's disappointed expression. I waved my hand in front of his face and said, "You know, she comes from a different World Series. Her world has different landmarks and cities and countries. She comes from Ingary, where her father is one of the Royal Wizards." I turned to Harmony. "So, what's all this business about a prophecy and 'the power of the gods' and all that? I know you know what I'm talking about, you know all prophecies, especially ones about gods, or ones that refer to gods. So tell us if it means us, at least!" Harmony looked at the other two. "Well," she started, "It's rather hard to explain, but I think it is you. You see, thirteen years ago, there was another goddess born, but for some reason it didn't survive it's birth. As gods have nine lives or more usually, we naturally searched for girls with multiple lives that were born at the same time as she should have been. First, we found you, Loreli, with your four and a half lives. Then we started searching for the second one. Now, you are both here, and we, meaning all the gods and goddesses, will begin your training in how to use your powers, which are the powers of the goddess that was not born, split between the two of you, as were her lives." I sank down to the ground slowly. So I was half a goddess, or something? I looked at Hayley beseechingly, pleading for reassurance, and she shook her head slowly. Philippa plopped down beside me, her eyes dark. "So, we're, like, half a goddess each or something?" I asked cautiously.

((You guys are all doing great, andI just finished Charmed Life in the Chrestomanci Chronicles. Gwen was evil?!?!))

As Myrella finished speaking with everyone she had melted into slime((see previous)). She was taken to her room and put to bed. As soon as everyone left, she leaped out of bed and threw on a sweater. She wanted to leave without them asking so many questions. Besides, she wanted to explore anyway. She took her charms necklace and put it on. There were nine charms((charmed)) on it, but one was all burnt, and another was dark and drenched looking. They reminded her of the times that she had almost died: drowning, and in the terrible fire. Apparently, Howl had made her this bracelet of cats,((hint, hint)) because he knew she liked them. She walked down the halls, when she met up with Chrestomanci. He looked so peaceful she forgot to shut her powers off. She also forgot the necklace, for Howl had told her not to tell, or show anyone. He said, "Hello. I was just taking my midnight stroll. What about you?" He looked at her so quizzically, inoccently, she had to lie, for she knew she would get in trouble. "uh, umm," she stuttered, "I was...going to Loreli's room! She was going to tell me something. Yeah, that's it!" He said with a dazzling smile, "Me too. Here, I'll walk you there." He took his word and walked her all the way there, and opened the door for her. "Umm," she said, grasping at straws, "you wanted to see me?" She looked at Loreli and Pippa and everyone else in the room, and noticed she hadn't thought about that. She pleaded with her eyes, and Pippa said, "Uhh, yeah, I mean.. Yes, we did." She looked to Chrestomanci, and he nodded. But he looked as if he had something else on his mind. 'oh!' she gasped silently in her head, 'he saw my charms!!!' He was looking directly at her. then he turned away and started briskly down the hall...

((Yay!! Now my turn!!!)) ((Can somebody make me at least do something interesting in their posts, instead of looking nervous and frightened and appearing here and there and not saying a word?!))

I was staring at the weird peackock-man's dressing gown, when all of the sudden the door crashed open, and standing in the doorway, was a bedraggled girl with sodden clothes, with a nice strong aura, and gasped something I couldn't understand, then collapsed in a heap of sodden clothes and water. Then Pippa stared, then shouted, "Myrella!" and ran over to the sodden girl, when a whole bunch of wierd people pushed her aside and dragged her off. I walked over slowly, wondering what was going on, and Loreli walked over too, but much faster, and conversed with Pippa , although I was still quite far away, I could still hear them. "Who's that?" Loreli asked Pippa. "Howl's apprentice, Myrella." replied Pippa, her voice abviously chocking with hysteria. I wondered who Howl was. I vaguelly remembered hearing that name once or twice. "He wouldn't have sent her if he wasn't in trouble! Something's wrong!" Pippa said. Loreli nodded. I thought, Please somebody explain what is going on!!!! as I stopped at Pippa's side. She seemed to notice me, and looked at me. I stared at here with wide eyes. I noticed she had a very shocked aura. She looked back and seemed to freeze. I wandered off, wondering whether or not if I should scream for explanation. My scream was very high, and I noticed that the Castle was mainly hard surface, and decided not to. But I really felt like screaming. A several people walked over to Pippa, and I thought that everything was going around me, and I was begening to feel like I was some kind of flea or somthing similar. The peackock-man said, loud enough for even me to hear, "But we can talk and eat at the same time, and as far as I know, this Myrella person is still unconscious. Lettie, shall we?" and I thought, as the peackock-guy offered me his arm, which I politly accepted, I'm not a flea after all, I guess!

(( Please make me talk at least!! I'll catch up with you guys, or try to, now.))

We sat down at the dinner table, and I ate all the things I knew what it was, but then I realized there wasn't enough stuff I knew what it was for me to get full, so I tried some other stuff. I ate some really wierd stuff. Some of the foods that I ate I'm not quite sure I ate it the right way or not, but I guess I did because nobody critisized me. All the while they talked, but I was very good at tuning out other people that I didn't hear a thing. I had to be very good at it or else I would never be able to read a book without reading things, then there would be a "I got ya! You're it!". Then there would be a response of "I didn't want to play Tag in the first place!" Then a,"But you're it!" and then,"Hmmph!! I'm not playing." or something similar.
Then they set out the desserts and there was something white and soft and creamy, and I heard somebody say that it was diced tream, and I wondered what it was. I ate a quite a bit of the 'diced tream'. It tasted good. Almost like whipped cream, exept it was much colder. I wished I had brought my cardigan. I was freezing from all the diced tream I had eaten. I was shivering. I looked at  my arms, and I was suprised how many goose-bumps I had. I blew on my arms, then shivered even more. My teeth were chattering so much, that if anyone had asked me anything, I would have answered something like," W-w-wwhat'd-d-d y-y-you s-s-sa-a-aaayyyy?!?!?!" I felt like an ice-cube. Brrrrrrrrrrr. I thought, I wish I had something to keep me warm!! I warmed up eventually. But I decided never to eat that much diced tream without a jacket or some thing other with me.

((How's that!! One question. Where do I sleep? I wanna know where I am during the night.)) ((By the way, somebody's gotta tell me that it's ice-cream, not diced tream....)) ((P.S. I really am cold at the moment, that's why I'm being cold in the post!!! V(^~^) <--- eating ice-cream.))
