I may get it published....

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

                                                    ~1~

The night before his hatching the light of the moon glided through Cirruss' shell, stroking his brow the way a loving mother might do.  Deep inside himself he remembered her fingers, her lullabies while he formed inside his egg.  In the darkness of his mind he saw her, he felt the shafts of her light slipping through the silver membrane to land across his feathers like a stained glass window from an ancient cathedral. He sensed the presence of her spirit, her magic slipping into his wings, running through his bones.

Moon?

Cirruss.

What are you doing?

I am giving you a gift.

He felt her fingers brush against his forehead.

Use it wisely little one, for the stars have foretold you shall be king of Fyrrlae someday.

A vision spread out before him, an owlet gazing across a resplendent scene, hills rolling across the outskirts of his vision while his subjects played in the light of the moon.  Their laughter pooling across Fyrrlae like an ocean.

Spread peace and love. As I have done with you.  For that is the thread that holds our worlds together.

The face of a snowy owlet filled Cirruss' vision, her gossamer plumage alight with an oracular glow.

Cirrus stared breathless.

She is beautiful isn't she?

Yes--yes she is very beautiful.  Wh-who is she?

She is your future mate.

Oh.

The moon fell silent, making Cirrus uneasy.

What is it?

The threads will not hold forever Cirrus, you will be tested dear one, pass and you shall rule Fyrrlae for many moons.

The vision now held two owlets together, a king and a queen ruling peacefully with one another.

What moon?  What if I fail?

The vision shifted, a shadow falling over the land, owls cowered in fear as their laughter configured into screams of tortured death.

If you fail the kingdom shall be ripped from your talons and another shall rise in your place.

A silvery figure rose from the shadows, light curling from their talons through their wings, ripping through the darkness like a knife.

They shall strike you down across the head and make you rot along with the thieves and murderers of Frrylae.

The vision faded away, Ciruss' shell returning to its original contrast.

Do you understand Ciruss?

Cirrus was silent, prodding over the images he had just witnessed.

Do you understand?

I----I think-- so, but tell me moon, what will the test be?

That is a secret held in the stars dear one.

Cirrus felt her presence drift, slowly evaporating from his shell like water from a leaf.

No, wait, you havnt answered my questions! Who will my conquerer be?  Will they have an army or will they be alone? Am I to rule over all Fyrrlae or only a small portion...

Cirrus fell silent as he slowly realized he was alone.  The only sound the beating of his own heart against his chest.

Five years later....

I'll finish the rest as soon as this pops up....

Have as many cookies as you would like! And here is your prize! A recipe:

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

½ cup margarine, softened

1 cup white sugar

3 tablespoons real maple syrup

1 egg

½ cup white sugar

¼ cup maple sugar

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon. Set aside.

Step 2

In a large bowl, cream together the margarine and 1 cup of white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and maple syrup. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients until just mixed. In a small dish, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup white sugar and the maple sugar. Roll dough into 1-inch balls, and roll the balls in the sugar mixture. Place cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Step 3

Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Cookies will be crackly on top and look wet in the middle. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.

These sound really good. I might try them. But I'm not sure if our local stores sell maple sugar.
