Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Coraline, the new gripping obsession
So I finally...

So I finally just broke down and got it from the library. I'd heard good things, even if it *is* just a fad. Believe my reasoning was Ah well, I read the Twilight books, should have no qualms about Coraline.

I finished a few other books, avoided it for a few days while I felt guilty about getting it, and then picked it up while enduring the car ride to Ohio. And read it in an hour.

Mind candy? Why yes. I believe so.

It wasn't terrible, though. I loathed Coraline's cutesy-smart-lil' girl behaviour, of course, having been hoping for more macabre-type (I mean, really, it's Neil Gaiman), and the evil "other mother" could've been far more twisted and wicked, but overall it was pretty okay.

Assuming that other people have read it, thoughts?

Sorry, I haven't read it.

I have! Actually, I agree with you on just about everything! But... it's a 'fad' where you live? Interesting... Where I live, no one even knows the book exists. They only know about the movie - which reminds me, is it even legal to base a movie on a book without saying so?

I think the movie people would have to get permission from the author of the book.

I hated this book. I'm not a fan of scary stories, but when I do occasionally read them, I don't get too freaked out once I'm done with the book. But Coraline...I couldn't fall asleep for hours. *shudder*

@ Ima: Well, not as much as other things (*coughs and says nothing*), but to a cerain extent.

Also, did they not give Gaiman credit? I haven't seen the movie, but I might...

@ Allison: Please... that could've been so much better (as in scarier) if it was written by someone else... I actually thought it wasn't nearly scary enough. It was sort of, I don't know, thin. Though I'm not slighting you for getting creeped out... my fourth grade self wanted to sue R. L. Stine for depriving me of sleep. Now, of course, I recognize how corny and ridiculous Goosebumps is.. but nevertheless, fourth grad, so, you know.

I just don't get scared by books easily... I didn't see anything in the movie credits mentioning that there was a book. Not anything at all. It wasn't mentioned in the newspaper article about the movie, either.

It's like how they put "from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas" so everyone'll think it's Tim Burton.

Poor Henry Selick. He's getting stiffed. :(

Not that I have anything against Burton, of course. *smirk* Can't wait for Alice in Wonderland.

There's a book?? I saw the movie, and it did freak me out for a while. Now i'm not really a fan of buttons.

That's just what I was talking about. The movie said nothing about a book. I really don't know if they got permission from the author...

It smelled worse than "Stinking Bishop" and the plot was horribly put together.

I thought the plot was very good and original. I really am not usually a fan of horror stories, but I was able to make an exception for this.

Eh, it was ok. I've read MUCH better, though.
