Lord of the Rings

Here’s a place to talk about J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings!  Or just books he wrote in general.

Who is/are your favorite character(s)?  Which book do you like the most?  Favorite quotes?  Ask eachother quiz questions.

Have fun!

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their hall of stone,

Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die,

One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

One Ring to rule them all.  One Ring to find them,

One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

- Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien

Ah, Tolkien. Shall I get poetic?

No! No!No!

Aww. Alright. Where would you live in Middle Earth? I'd be in Rivendell.

Go ahead and get poetic!  I do it too sometimes, it’s fun.

As for your question:  I think I would prefer to wander from place to place than live anywhere specific.  Maybe if I really wanted to live somewhere I would choose the Shire.  It seems like a nice homely place.

Have you read any of the Middle-earth history books?  I’ve read The Children of Hurin.  It was good and gave greater detail to the history mentioned in the Lord of the Rings.

Legolas and Elrond are awesome

also what if Bilbo's name was Balbo Biggins instead of Bilbo Baggins? I think about that all the time.

also, for whoever has seen the movies, don't Frodo's eyes look kinda weird?

Sincerely, a person who wonders why cricket bothers with the name thing when people always say fake names

Oh my goodness, I love these books so much!

If I could live somewhere in Middle Earth, I would live in the Shire, or maybe Minas Tirith.

Favorite characters: Yes. All. But in particular, I love Sam Gamgee, Peragrine Took, Aragorn, Legolas, and Eowyn.

Favorite book: Probably the Return of the King.

WARNING: The Appendices of Return of the King contain information about the deaths of many of the characters I listed above. Read with caution. *Sobs in a corner*

All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost,

The old that is good does not wither,

Deep roots are not touched by the frost.

Question. Would you rather be: A Rider of Rohan or a Ranger?

Question: What do you think of the movie?

Quiz: At the end of the Return of the King, Sam comments that Merry and Pippin are much taller than a hobbit normally is. What caused their extra growth?

Quiz: Legolas has a sister in the books. What is her name?

Ranger, movies are good, never read the books bc I've heard that they drag on and on and on and on and ON and ON and... you get the idea.

It's true that the length of the books can be intimidating!

However, the books are absolutely amazing. I can't express exactly what I want to say, but all of the places in the books are realer than they seem in the movie, and all the characters are more noble or more villainous or more brave, and always much more real.

Don't get me wrong, the movies are excellent! But they just can't quite capture the beauty and the strength of everything in the books. Watching the movies is like looking at a black-and-white picture of a lake at sunset. The picture is beautiful, but it lacks the depth, the realness of the actual lake.

If you ever do decide to give the books a try, I would suggest listening to them on audio. If you can get the version narrated by Rob Ingles, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I think I’d prefer to be a Ranger.

Ahg, I can’t remember the name of Legolas’s sister!  I’ll remember at some point.

I’ve never watched the movies as I’m not much of a movie watcher.  Are they worth watching?  And how scary are they?

I like all of the characters.  But if I had to pick I would say, Sam, Gandalf, Legolas, and Aragorn.

Have any of you read the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini?  I mention this because I think the author was influenced a little by Tolkien.  Though the story is still very unique.

You are welcome to share titles of books that reminded you of Lord of the Rings.

I'd say that the movies are worth watching, and they're not super scary, especially if you've read the books and know what's going to happen.

However, they do change the plot and some of the characters in ways that I don't agree with. (For instance, Faramir, Treebeard, and Galadriel.)

Tolkien, nice. I actually didn't use to like LotR much, but my brother got me into it, he's a complete Tolkien nerd (he's read the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and Beren and Luthien and all that stuff...to this day he continues to lecture me about how I should memorize Aragorn's family tree and all of Frodo's various cousins) so now it's one of my favorite books/fandoms.

Lothlórien sounds good to me :)  My favorite character is probably Eowyn. I like The Two Towers the most.

Favorite quote: "It seemed that Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. 'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Eowyn I am, Eomund’s daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.'"

I have John Howe's (who did the conceptual art for the movie) book of Tolkien drawings, A Middle-Earth Traveler, and it's very good. John Howe is such an amazing artist

The movies are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING in almost all ways (acting, set, character design...) although I do agree with Hummingbird that a few things just lack the depth that Tolkien put into his worldbuilding. Also, is anyone else a little annoyed with the character of Tauriel? I mean, she doesn't even exist in the original the Hobbit

And...wow. That turned out long.
