Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Continuation of the Hitchhiker Trilogy!
Today they released...

Today they released a continuation of DNA's original five-book trilogy. It was written by Eoin Colfer (the Artemis Fowl guy). Apparently it's titled, "And Another Thing: Part Six of Three."

Will be interesting to see how /Eoin Colfer/ picks up where /Douglas Adams/ left off...

I have yet to purchase/get it from the library... I hope they didn't mess it up too badly...

H'mm... Have you read Artemis Fowl? It's pretty good, but her style of writing is a lot different then DA. Should be *interesting*.

Yeah, I read all the Arty books and I'm wondering how Eoin Colfer'll pull this off... he and DNA have very different senses of humour, wouldn't you say?

Cue Cullen, completely and utterly inverted to within an inch of its life.

"There's a new Hitchhiker's book coming out?! SQUEE!" "...WHO is writing it?! NOOOOOO!"

*weeps*

It's not that he's a bad author, just a bit unsuited for continuing /DNA's/ series...

My point EXACTLY.

My personal pick of authors to write another Hitchhiker's book would be either Terry Pratchett (who is really too funny to be allowed) or Hugh Laurie (read the Gun Seller. It's hilarious). They have if not exactly the same sense of humor, but darn close.

Then again, continuations of series that aren't by the original authors almost always turn out bad (case in point: the Oz series after Baum died), or at least substandard compared to the original author's work.

Then again again, EC might pull an Ensemble Darkhorse out of nowhere and be fantastic.

Then again again again, I really doubt it...

Of course, it might be so bad, that it's like a terrible fanfic, that you can't not laugh at, even though it's so terrible.

So we have three options here: Ensemble Darkhorse ((fingers crossed!)), So Bad it's Horrible ((my bet)), and Narm/So Bad it's Good ((also probable)).

Not that anyone but me knows who he is, but... Neil Zawacki, for one. His "How to Be A Villain" is *hilarious*. If mind candy.

And other people who aren't coming to mind... oh, well, Derek Landy. He would probably be good. A better choice than Eoin Colfer will possibly turn out to be, anyway.

...Ensemble Darkhorse? ((and yes, I know you're tiring of my "end of post ellipse-random-phrase-question-mark" thingy, but... yeah...))

"How to be a Villian"? That sounds promising. I'll have to get that out of the library sometime.

I really need to read the last two Hitchhicker's books. The other ones were hillarious, so I might just break down and try to buy them.

...At which point I went and read the HP thread and realized you defined "Ensemble Darkhorse" on there. *shakes head at self*

How about this: Why is it called an Ensemble Darkhorse?

"The term Darkhorse has its origin in horse racing. A relatively unknown horse would be risky to place bets on, compared to a known horse, because the gamblers would be "in the dark", so when an unknown horse won a race it was called a Darkhorse victory. The term is also used in politics to describe a lesser known candidate who does better than expected in an election." [TV Tropes]

Usually it's a character trope, but it applies in this case as well. When used in a trope context it's when a minor/flat character or (in this case) a less-than-wonderful choice for a "replacement" DNA is unexpectedly popular with the general fandom.

I really don't see how one could continue it. I mean, everybody's dead.

Doesn't mean a thing, they've died before haven't they?

*snorts with laughter* Good point... I loved that series...

@ TNO (umlaut): Thanks, that makes sense.

My very lovely mother got me "And Another Thing..." from Barnes'n'Noble today... I'm only on chapter one but *squee*! EC hasn't killed it yet! He's actually doing it pretty well! I mean, I can tell it's not DNA, but it's still fairly humourous and decent writing, if slightly different from the style/format of DNA's writing. *cheers*
