Book Recommendations

Another thread I'm creating in an attempt to help "revive" the CB (see that thread on the Inkwell). Recommend books here! Tell the title and author of the book, genre, and synopsis (no spoilers, please!). Have fun!

Er, uh uh uh...

Sorry for the weird intro to my comment! If I posted that for an actual title I would never forgive myself. It's like bringing a pile of junk and trash into the CB! Just imagine...

Books to Recommend:

Series:Chronicles of Ancient Darkness

Michelle Paver

Uh...Fantasy or Historical Fiction? It's classified awkwardly at my library.

(Don't blame me if this is a bad synopsis!) Embark on a never-ending adventure with Torak and Renn as they face the Bear. The adventure crawls with demons and soul-eaters. (And the next books are above my age level.)

Series: Gods and Warriors

Michelle Paver (again, I know)

Fantasy

I'm only on the 2nd book, but: This series is based on Greek Mythology, but Michelle Paver tweaked it a little. That's kind of all I can say...

Is this enough?

Here are my recommendations:

1. Momo, by Michael Ende. (I know, I've already talked about this one before.) It's a fantasy novel, but it has a good sprinkling of realistic fiction characteristics as well. It's a fascinating story of an Italian girl who tries to save the world from sinister
"time-thieves". It's so beautiful. It's one of those books that makes you
cry. The characters are wonderful people, and the author's message is
SO relevant to our times. Seriously, it should be required reading for everyone in school. (It was written in German originally - I'd recommend the translation by J. Maxwell Brownjohn.)

2. Wonder, by R. J. Palacio. It's realistic fiction, and it's about aboy who looks different from everyone else, but is a really nice kid inside, and how he makes it through the fifth grade, making friends and battling enemies.

3. My Heart Lies South, by Elizabeth Borton de Treviño. It's a memoir written by an American woman who married a Mexican and went to live in Mexico. It's really entertaining and provides a pretty good idea of what Mexico used to be like, although she does get some things mixed up. It's also interesting to see how she adjusted to living in another culture. I would really recommend this on, mostly because it's so fun to read. (There are two more books that come after this one, which are also quite good.)

Here are totally-not-too-many of my favorites NOT IN ANY ORDER also totally-not-(fine maybe)-copy-pasted-from-a-book-thread-because-I'm-being-lazy:

- Ranger's Apprentice (series) by John Flanagan. If you like him, he's written other books that are also very good. Fantasy, about rangers kind of like Strider from Lord of the Rings.

- Septimus Heap (series) by Angie Sage. Also more books by her that are good. Fantasy, Magyk (that's not a typo. Don't read this series if you can't stand misspelled words in books).

- Anything by James Ponti (I don't mean a book called anything, I mean any book by him). He writes really good mystery with main characters around our age. Or you can't go wrong with a good Agatha Christie for mysteries.

- the Mistmantle Chronicles (series) by M.I. McAllister. A world of critters, think squirrels, rats, crows, etc. Fantasy, adventure.

- the Bartimaus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud. Also Lockwood and Co (series). The first one is magic and demons, the second one is ghosts and slight mystery. Equally good.

- The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. There's others in the series, book 1 (goose girl) and book 2 are best. Fantasy, but less adventury than the rest of them.

- Ascendance (series) by Jennifer Neilson. Fantasy, treason, kingdoms battling each other.

- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. Fantasy. This one is cool because the main characters aren't the typical kinds of heros—they're from the slums and definitely at least partly evil, not the typical goody-goody heros. Also other books by her.
