Esperanza Rising
I'm obsessed with...

I'm obsessed with Esperanza Rising, has anyone read it? I just wonder.
Also, I don't speak English, but could the admins translate? I really
like the website and use the magazine to help me learn English. I really
enjoy it so thank you very much. Anyway, I love this book. Which is your favourite character? Mine is Hope! :)

YES IVE READ IT!!!!!!!!!!

I don't remember there being a character named Hope...I read it for my literature class and my classmates really like Miguel. Honestly, I like him too. He's really sweet...

I googled it, "esperanza" means "hope" in spanish so it's likely la_chica-espanola meant their favorite character is esperanza.

You're from Spain? That's so cool! I've always wanted to visit Spain. I'm from Mexico originally, so I speak Spanish too! Unfortunately languages other than English aren't permitted on the Chatterbox, though. Feel free to ask me if you need me to clarify anything I've said :)

I haven't read Esperanza Rising, but I've heard of it. It sounds interesting, from the title. What's it about?

Anyway, welcome to the CB (the Chatterbox)! I look forward to seeing you around!

Hola! I'm learning Spanish; good luck on your English! I read Esperanza Rising a few years ago after a friend recommended it to me. I don't remember the characters much, but it was a very nice story. Hmm, I should really read it again ...

English: Ooh, I have an idea! So, you're learning English, right? Well, I'll post this in Spanish (I'm half Bolivian) and then I'll translate it into English after! This way, you can practice English with the Spanish translation! Not trying to be rude, just trying to be helpful.

I've read it, but it was a while ago, ahaha. I think we either lost the book or my brother gave it to a charity, but it was an excellent read and I really enjoyed it.

Echo ,  we  only  post   English  on  Chatterbox .

I think the admins got it wrong, I mean I think they said Hope instead of Esperanza. Alright. I just wanted my favorite character to be Esperanza.

Sorry if this is too hard to translate. I really like having people who also enjoy books like me. It can be confusing for people reading this, because the translations are not always correct.

Well, is there any other book that you recommend that has a Spanish version? I'd really like to know. Thank you very much to all.

Also, admins, what do you mean by 'we don't allow other languages'? I find it sad because others are trying to help me with English and you just erased the Spanish. Could you explain?

We love that Cricket is helping you learn English, and the others' offers to help are very thoughtful. But unfortunately, we only allow posts in English because we Admins don't have the time to check the translations of posts in other languages. - Admin

Oh well. I understand. But maybe when someone is only giving two versions, you could keep it? My mom gave me permission to use Google Translate, so I'll translate from now on.

Oops, I thought that would work because I put the English translation. No hard feelings, though, Admins! I understand, although I do certainly wish that other languages were allowed on Chatterbox so that more people from around the world could converse.

Anyway, la_chica_española, about book recommendations:

Wings of Fire! It's an incredible series about dragons, however it is a bit gory so if you aren't into that, then I wouldn't recommend reading it. In Spanish on Amazon.

Hooky! The author is from Spain! It's an incredible book about a pair of twins who are witches. It has beautiful illustrations (it's a graphic novel) and is very detailed. They have it in Spanish on Amazon, if I'm not mistaken.

Keeper of The Lost Cities! It's about a elf girl who can read minds, but she was born and raised in the human world. It's very good, and there are 9 books so far. It comes up on Amazon as Sophie Foster. In Spanish.

Hope this helped!

Well, one of my favorite books ever is Los arboles mueren de pie, by Alejandro Casona (who was from Spain, I believe). I love the language Casona uses, as well as the plot and the characters. I find it a really beautiful, fascinating story. I don't like all of Casona's works, but this one is wonderful :) I also like Maria, by Jorge Isaacs, which is a romantic novel. It's set in Columbia, which is where the author was from, and it's very sad, but very beautiful.

If you're looking for good poetry to read, I would really recommend Juan Ramón Jiménez. His poems are gorgeous. And this doesn't count as a book exactly, but I can't resist - I just have to recommend the Mafalda cartoons, by Quino (an Argeninian). They're really funny and I love reading them :)

As for books that were written in English originally, there are the Chronicles of Narnia books, by C. S. Lewis (I'm not sure what they're called in Spanish). They're very exciting and well-written - while you're reading, you almost forget that it's just a story. They're about the adventures and events that happen in the magical world of Narnia. Oh, and Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, is very good. It's called Mujercitas in Spanish.

I'm really excited that I can talk with you about books written in Spanish! Do you have any recommendations of books that you like? Since I live in the United States now, I don't practice Spanish as much as I should, and I like to read things in Spanish, because it helps me practice more.

I love the Mafalda comics! My Spanish teacher loves them and she sometimes shows them to us, and they're hilarious xD I love that they're both very goofy but also always have some kind of social commentary.

I had no idea you'd read them! I love the social commentary too. :) I wish Quino were still writing them. Imagine how nice it would have been to read Mafalda cartoons about the pandemic or climate change.... Who's your favorite character? I like Mafalda and Susanita, and also Mafalda's father.

I think Mafalda's probably my favorite, I don't really know anyone else's name. I should try to see if my library has a book of them because the only ones I've read are the ones my teacher has shown us.

Ooh yes, do look for them! They're so funny and somehow soothing, which seems contradictory because they have so much social commentary, but there it is.
