Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Longest Thread
The longest thread...

The longest thread on CaC is now finished. I would not like that thread to ever die, so...I pronounced that thread closed. It is not dead, it was just put to sleep. :-)

Anyways, we CBers now have a new mission. We need to make the longest thread ever made here on BaB. The main topic of this thread is books. Please feel free to chat about any books you like.

We have a big challenge, though. We need to get more than 1061 posts! Do you think we can accomplish it? If we try our best we can!

Okay, enough of the pep talk. Let's get chatting!!!! :-D

No, I've never read it. :-)  How about we all make a list of our top five (or more!) books?

Sorry, but that is impossible. Almost every book I've read, I've loved. ALMOST. And I've forgotten what books I checked out on all those library trips in the past....

I love the Discworld books! Last night, I actually dreamed that I went to a school where satire was a required class, but our teacher was horribly bad at it, so eventually, we had to teach him, using a Discworld book (I forget which, but it was my idea!) as a textbook. It was strange, because I am not a satiric person. I haven't read many, just The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight, and I think one other Tiffany Aching book whose title I don't remember (definitely not A Hat Full of Sky or The Wee Free Men), but they're brilliant! I know I'm not the only CBer who's read them, either, because TNO and ZNZ are obsessed with it, and Leaf loves it, too.

Detc says ewic. There's no Eric in the Discworld books, so he must mean ew! Ick! What? The Discworld books are not icky!

In fact, one of the Discworld books is titled Eric. I read it recently; it's about Rincewind (and a demonologist named Eric), and despite being extremely short, it's quite enjoyable. There's this hilarious Trojan War parody, which I loved. (Especially the Disc version of Odysseus.)

Discworld sounds interesting. What's it about?

Are the books better than the movies? My dad made me watch one of them, I think it was The Colour of Magic, and it wasn't very good. Then again, books are almost always better than movie adaptations, so maybe I'll give the books a try.

Actually, the movies are quite like the books, especially Hogfather. It helps if you read the books first, though.

The thing you have to remember is that the movies are quite quite incomprehensible to those who haven't read the books. And even ignoring that, Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic are by far the weakest in the series, especially as they're the first. DEFINITELY try one of the books.

Okay, top five favorite books. Right now, that would probobly be:

The Ranger's Apprentice books by John Flanagan

The Kane Chronicals by Rick Riordan

The Omnivore's Dilemma by Micheal Pollan

Gerbils: The Complete Guide to Gerbil Care by Donna Anistasi (I meet her once at the New England Gerbil Show. So awesome!!!)

The Fablehaven books by Brandon Mull

There's more, but I'd need a lot of room to write it down.

Afton's post isn't up yet, so I'll just reply to what is.

Elizabeth: They're a satirical fantasy series set on a flat planet carried by 4 elephants riding on the back of a turtle. It's like our world, but different.

Alexandra: I haven't seen the movies, but I imagine they can't be as good as the books.

ZNZ: Really? That sounds great! I had no idea; I shouldn't have made a definitive statement. One of the books I read has a list of characters, and he wasn't mentioned, so I suppose I just assumed he didn't exist. Actually, I'm sure Detc must have been talking about him, because in addition to the books' non-ickiness, he now says erih. No, really! I'd probably be skeptical if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, but it's true.

Sarah: I've read all those except the one on gerbils, but the ones I have read are excellent!

My own favorites, in no particular order:

1. Things by Tolkien

2. Things by Terry Pratchett (including non-Discworld books, one of which, Nation, I have read)

3. Things by Ursula K. LeGuin

4. Animal: The Ultimate Visual Guide to the World's Wildlife

5. Er... THERE ARE TOO MANY OTHERS! Sacred religious texts don't count, right, since presumably if you practice religion (as most people here seem to) you love any holy book your religion has, and it's really a given? Wel,, then... eh... There are too many; I can't choose.
