Mottoes!

Mottoes!

Mottoes!
What are some of everybuggy's mottoes? Post a few that you know everyone will agree with, then post some that you know that some people disagree with! And, we can challenge each other's mottoes and maybe even change our own opinions! Fun, fun, fun.
For mine, mottoes everyone will agree with:

1: Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still.

Mottoes that can be challenged:
1: It's better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.
2: Ideas are there to be challenged, people to be disagreed with, and stereotypes to be defied.
3: Peace does not make the world go round. Did the Sons of Liberty create America by being PEACEFUL? Did Martin Luther King get his rights by BEING QUIET? Did slaves get their rights WITHOUT A FIGHT?
4: Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction.

My motto that, I guess, could be challenged:

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I don't really have a motto, although those are some good ones... the first one under "Can be challenged" reminds me of a Marina and the Diamonds song...

I don't know that I agree with #3, though. If you simply mean peace as the opposite of an uprising / war, I think it's incorrect to say that peace doesn't accomplish anything. Look at Martin Luther King Jr., or Rosa Parks. All their protests were non-violent. And sure, M.L.K. didn't earn his rights by staying quiet, but there's a difference between staying quiet and staying peaceful. He remained peaceful and caused no harm while still pushing towards change.

Ditto what HAB said. Summed up my thoughts perfectly.

I find it curious that you spell the word as "mottoe." I have always spelled it like "motto."

Anyway, I don't really have a personal motto...it's just that there are many quotes or mottos that I have my own say about, so I think this seems like a pretty interesting thread.

A quote I like off the top of my head is, "Well-behaved women rarely make history." GIRL POWER! Before you crinkle your nose at this, like, "So misbehaving women or criminals are the people that are important to history?" I think of this quote as not necessarily acting up, but definitely saying or doing what is not expected or accepted.

And may I seize the opportunity to do some Hamilton quoting?

I think that one of the truest, most serious, I guess you can say quote from Hamilton:

"Let me tell you what I wish I knew

When I was young and dreamed of glory:

You have no control

Who lives who dies who tells your story.

To quote Lin-Manuel Miranda (who wrote, composed, and stars in the musical): "This is the truest thing I have ever written."

More quotes:

-“Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see." (The World Was Wide Enough)

-“Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, And no one shall make them afraid.” (One Last Time) George Washington says this, and I like it because of the fact George Washington would actually used this quote in real life shows how in-depth Lin-Manuel Miranda researched the characters. In fact, it was his favorite quote from the Scripture. (OMG, so I am quoting 3 things at once: the Scripture, the real George Washington, and George Washington from the musical. :O)

Since this is actually a motto, Washington's motto, you can actually discuss this. As well as the "You have no control who lives who dies who tells your story." one.

-“We push away what we can never understand. We push away the unimaginable." (It's Quiet Uptown)

For anyone who has dealt with loss of any kind, this lyric is relatable. This simple line perfectly describes how someone feels when they are going through such a tough time. It touches your heart. Especially when you listen to Angelica singing it, and you're crying over the soundtrack.

Yes. Yes. YEEEESSSSS!!!! Well-behaved women do not make history!!!!!!!

Also, "mottoes" is the plural form of "motto". Sorry for the confusion!

Speaking of which, Owlgirl, guess who found "Aaron Burr, Sir" the other day and is now obsessed with it?

It's me! I am!

Also, I don't have a specific motto, really, but I do like the phrase "You shouldn't care about what others think, because they can only see the icing on the cake that is you."

Vixtion has one too, "vcee".

Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

So happy for you!

Though, promise me you will listen to the soundtrack in order. It's so good...if you listen closely, you don't even have to look up a summary or anything. Since there is pretty much no dialogue, EVERYTHING happens within the music. It's like reading a good book...only listening to it. So it's like an audio book, only one with singing and rapping.

Look up the soundtrack. There should be 46 songs. But the first one, Alexander Hamilton, you'll have to find elsewhere, because of copyright issues or something, it's not on there anymore.

And if you already love it, then you will be obsessed before it's even halfway over. Because, being honest here, I listened to the first four songs and was thinking, "Okay, this is pretty good, but I really don't see why all my theater pals are obsessed with it."

By the time i was halfway through, I was SO INTO THE STORY, because, I'm not a historian, and I have no idea what will happen next. Warning; I spent some time crying on the floor of my room in the darkness. I am not kidding.

And you know what I did when I finished it?

The next day, I started listening to it again, this time with the annotated lyrics, and looked up pictures of the performers in their costumes. You should do this, the looking up photos of them.

Note: There are lots of double roles, and the actors do an amazing job at switching voices: Daveed Diggs plays LAFAYETTE in Act 1 and THOMAS JEFFERSON in Act 2. Anthony Ramos plays JOHN LAURENS in Act 1 and PHILLIP HAMILTON in Act 2. Okieriete Onaodowan (his name is the only name I haven't memorized, and for good reason. I just refer to him as OO.) plays HERCULES MULLIGAN in Act 1 and JAMES MADISON in Act 2 (which I think is the most dramatic change). Jasmine Cephas Jones plays PEGGY SCHUYLER in Act 1 and then another role in Act 2.

My motto is: It is not enough to be friendly, you have to be a friend.

My other motto is: You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him participate in synchronized diving.

The last one certainly can't be challenged and I am pretty sure the first one can't be either.

I have only 1 motto I go by at the moment, (if you could call it a motto:)

"I read anything I can get my hands on."

Ha! I love that!

I don't have any mottoes. It's just not something I think of.

Okay, okay, here are my two mottos:

"There is no frigate like a book." A frigate is a ship.

"I am not throwin' away my shot!" I am serious; it's about confidence, and stubbornness, and independence.

Yaaa. Hm I have lots of mottos, but I think my favorite one is the thing from the Cinderella movie: "Have courage, and be kind."

Oh that quote about the sychronized swimming thing was funny.

My motto is

Nothing makes one older than realizes how young you are.

And, I agree with Mei-xue, anything worth doing is worth doing well. :)

Actually, BT, that quote came from me. It's confusing because I tacked it on to the bottom of Mei's comment, which is faster and easier for me when there are lots of comments to post. And I got it from a dear artist friend who did phenomenal work, not only in art but also in synchronized swimming. She now lives far away from me.
