Not Sport Activities That Are Considered Easier

I was inspired by the Pet Peeves thread to make this. There are a lot of people who do activities that aren't sports, like dance or chorus. This is partially a rant thread and partially a gathering thread. Who else gets annoyed when people say that your activity isn't as important as sports, or it isn't as draining, or it doesn't require as much devotion, or that it isn't as hard? This is a place to get annoyed about that!

I am an Irish step dancer. So far, I only know of one other CBer that Irish dances (Killim). Is there anyone else?

Personally, it doesn't bother me when people say that my activity, fine art, isn't as important as sports- I just keep in mind that there's all kinds of careers involving the fine arts and a very small chance of becoming a professional athlete. Also, I love to do it, so I don't care that much. I don't do any "activities" like singing or theater, but like sports and fine art, it takes A TON of practice and dedication to become good at it. People have different talents, and no one should be put down for what they like to do.

I'm Novice/Prizewinner. Ish. Oh, well, here are the exact details:

My Reel, Light Jig, and Treble Jig are Prizewinner. My Slip Jig and Hornpipe are Novice. My Traditional Set is Advanced Beginner/Beginner 2.

And my school doesn't do the Single Jig.

You don't have to read that if you don't want to, but if you're curious...

Lucky! I want to get to prelims and Oireachtas, but I have a while to go.

I'm not going to any competitions until October, when there is a double feis - one on Saturday and one on Sunday. It will be my first competition since maybe April.

Good luck!

Dont worry, I'm sure you'll make it to prelim! I bet you're really good. ;)

And thanks, I hope you have the luck o' the Irish at your competitons too! ^^

OMG NO WAAAAAY! GUYS! AHHHH!

I must agree with A Dancer, I do feel rather strongly against people saying dance is not a sport, but no hurt feelings. :D

Now.

YOU GUYS IRISH DANCE TOO??!!! AHSJFJENDKFIRHENXORI--

Sorry. Got carried away--I mean, come on, Dog! Why did you he to step on the keyboard? *throat clear* Anywho.

I'm FINALLY into Prelims. I've only ever been to Oireachtas once in my life, for Traditional set, but that was back in 2012. I'm hoping to go next time it's close, but this year it's just an hour too far... :,(

Our school is...well. Our teacher doesn't push competitions on us, but most of us do it anyway because 99% of us are competitive, stubborn, bullhead ed Aries'. XD

I'm also really excited. I'm having a dress made!! It's not your traditional Irish Dance though...think Ice Skating dress. That's all I'll share for now, more details later! *mysterious smile and wink*

Cool! And good job! I hope you can go to Oireachtas soon, whether it be this year or the next.

I posted something in Pudding's Place asking you about Oireachtas actually, haha.

WOH WOH WOH WHO EVER SAID THAT DANCING WASN'T A SPORT?!

Look it up people, DANCEING IS A SPORT! It is one of the MOST HARDEST sports out there. Anyone who thinks otherwise can answer to the millions of dancers in the world.

It's not a sport because dance is pretty, and girly, with a tu-tu, and requires  no physical requirements at all huh? Well you try doing all three splits, you try balancing on the tips of your toes while you spin and jump, you try lifting people with one arm, you try kicking your face with a straight knee and pointed toe, you try doing a dance for three minutes and not being able to stop and breath. No? That's what I thought.

Sorry, I've had this argument multiple times.....one may or may not have ended with me punching the guy in the face.....(cause FYI dancers have more mussels then any football player ever will)

;D

Dancers are so hardcore! My best friend loves dance (although she can't be on a team, she's really good at it) The things you all do are incredible! It's definitely the hardest sport, in my opinion. (That, and gymnastics)

No one has ever really said anything like that before to me, but trust me, I go to private ballet lessons and group lessons once a week, and it is as harder, if not HARDER than a sport. Dancing is considered a fine art, but you have to have the strength of a football player to dance ballet. My private lesson is thirty minutes of floor work, and thirty minutes of excersize and stretching. And my teacher is HARDCORE.

Another thing that I can rant on: splits. Please tell me I'm not the only dancer here that's the ONLY ONE in her class that isn't even CLOSE to doing the splits. I'm really, REALLY not flexible. And I'm working on it, I really am! But I still feel stupid trying to do the splits and those stretches when I'm the only one who can't put their elbows down. I've really been feeling bad because of this...it makes me feel like I'm not as good a dancer as the others. *sigh* I know it's silly, but it's really been getting to me. You don't have to read this if you don't want to.

Aw, don't feel bad! <3

One of my friends can't do a split either, so she mocks it. It's become almost like an inside joke to the class. "Guess who's split is the best here?" *she points to herself* Even though it's like four feet off the ground. xD

That might not make you feel any better xD But please, just because you can't do a split does NOT mean you are a bad dancer! I can't do a split either, but my kicks are some of the best in the class (not to brag of course). :) <3

Thanks. XD I'm also pretty bad at kicks, but it's great that you can do them, because they're really master!

I can't do the splits either :). Or planks. At dance camp, we were doing planks for like three minutes (eventually five minutes) and I kept going down and the teachers were like, "Come on, [my name]!" and I decided I just didn't care.
