Synesthesia

Does anyone else have/think they might have Synesthesia?

It's a nerological condition (I think) that combines senses, making you think of colors when you see letters or numbers, or even when you hear music.

I think I might have a form called "Time-Space Synesthesia" where I associate things with different places, but it's a bit different...

It's kind of like there's different...feels...to different things. Like, the word "Sunday" feels flat. The letter "A" is red for me as well, so I think I might have some of the more common Synesthesia symptoms as well. There are two main categories of Synesthesia, each with different types:

1. Projection Synesthesia:

Projection Synesthesia is the most common form of synesthesia which involves the projection of colours to certain letters, numbers, days of the week or words. On hearing words or music the individual is able to see colours corresponding to the word or music in front of him or her. In some cases however, instead of seeing the colour in front of them, a person may instinctively see the colour in their mind’s eye. Projection Synesthesia is further subdivided into different types:

-Grapheme Color Synesthesia:

Grapheme colour synesthesia is the most widely studied and common type of synesthesia. An individual is able to associate number or letters with certain colours. However, it is important to note that no two individuals will report seeing all alphabets or numbers in the same colours. It is however possible for most individuals with color graphemic synesthesia to report the same color for certain letters, like the letter “A” is unanimously reported as “Red”.

-Chromesthesia:

Chromesthesia is the form of synesthesia where an individual automatically experiences/perceives colours to every form of sound. Several artists suffering from chromesthesia have created masterpieces depicting the visual effects of music on them.

-Number Form Synesthesia:

Over a hundred years ago, Sir Francis Galton was one of the first individuals to record number form synesthesia. The graph created by Sir Galton, shows the mapping of numbers in a synesthetes mind, each individual creates a different map for himself/herself with different spatial arrangements between numbers. In some advance cases, an individual may also divide cluster of numbers into different colours.

-Misophonia:

Misophonia is considered the type of synesthesia which brings out a negative response from an individual. Upon hearing certain sounds or music a person may feel extreme disgust or anger.

-Personification:

This is a rare form of synesthesia where the synesthete is able to give a personality to numbers, alphabets, or days of the week. Thus, Friday could have a carefree and fun loving personality, the Alphabet A could exude the aura of the Alpha male of the pack, and the numeric 4 could be the happy-go-lucky child of the number system.

-Lexical- Gustatory Synesthesia:

Lexical-Gustatory Synesthesia is the rarest form of synesthesia. An individual with this type of synesthesia can taste certain words or sounds. Thus, the sound created by even raindrops falling on different surfaces can induce not just the taste, but an instinctive sensation of the warmth of the sound, and its placement on the tongue. This also means that some sounds, like say thunder can taste like coffee, the musical note A-minor can taste like gooseberry and so on.

2. Mirror Touch Synesthesia:

Mirror touch synesthesia is a relatively common form of synesthesia, where a person experiences certain sensations on their skin, as they observe another. For example, if such a synesthete is observing a pair of people, where one person taps the other person’s shoulder, then the synesthete may also experience a certain sensation at the same point in their shoulder. Several non-synesthetes have reported feeling pain on their corresponding body part in the event of observing wounds on another’s person’s body.

So, I know in the "CBers as Colors" thread, some of us were discussing Synesthesia, but do any more of you think you have it?

P.S: Yes, I did copy-paste some of this information, mainly because I'm lazy to type it all out.

Actually, yes, sometimes I kind of get the kinds of feelings you described. For example, numbers have genders for me, and so do days of the week. Most of them don't have much of a personality, but I can picture 5 being a tomboy. Also, months have colors as well. September is blue and August is pink. I don't actually see these colors, but I'm able to picture them easily with the month. I'm not 100% sure I have it, though.

I don't really see the colors as well, just associate them with some characters, like you. I don't have personalities for them, though. That's pretty cool!

Hey, that's cool! What kind of colors do you see for the alphabet?

Some that stand out to me as especially being a color are a (which is red with hints of magenta), d/g/f (which are all shades of green), and k, which is orange-yellow.

K is orange-yellow to me as well, and c is a slightly brighter shade for me!

I’m not sure, but I think I may have Lexical-Gustatory Synesthesia and maybe a slight touch of Mirror touch Synesthesia, Personification and Grapheme Color Synesthesia. Sunday is a wise oldest child, who always sees the bright side of things. Also, thunder tastes like salt water, and lightning is taffy, and the sound of rain is like pop rocks. Also, B Flat is a lovely flavor I can’t quite place. Sometimes I taste smells, and I don’t know if that has a name or if it’s just something everybody does lol

Okay. I have horrible misophonia.

1. CLANKING METAL! ARGH! IT DRIVES ME CRAZY AND I-

Oh my gosh.

I can taste metal.

When. I. Hear. Clanking. Of. Metal. D-does this mean I have Lexical-Gustatory Synthesia?

I also taste certain things when I smell them- and a couple of other things...

I taste tapioca when I hear whistles and leaf-blowing...

I probably also have minor mirror touch synesthesia-- unfortunately I don't know how to spell...

Sorry this hit me as a shock...

I too get the type of feelings you described. The word "Mean" is a star filled sky. The word "summer" brings a thought of green in my head. Diffrent music puts different images in my head of things, sometimes I can't describe them. I feel I always see things with letters of the alphabet.

And uh... I taste  things I hear sometimes, I didn't think anything of it I always thought everyone did. Like your shoes squashing the snow I get a taste in my mouth of lemonade. And when I hear the word reindeer I taste blueberries? I always thought It was quite weird but I thought it was just human nature.

Wait, that's synesthesia? I think I have some form of that that you're talking about, kind of. I think a lot of people do.

I remember having a conversation with my sister years ago about what things remind us of other things. The one I remember was scissors reminding us of windows, though I don't really understand what we meant now. May have just been some 7 and 9 year olds being weird.

Who knows! This has inspired me to make a post related to this, though, so thank you for that!

I have a slight case of synesthesia, I associate words, numbers, and letters with a color. I see them in my minds' eye as a certain color.

Something else interesting to note, synesthesia is inherited from your ancestors. Ask your parents or grandparents about it! It's likely that they have some form of synesthesia as well.

I do believe that my grandmother on my mother's side, has color association synesthesia and mirror touch synesthesia.

And doesn't everyone have misophonia? I am sure that everyone has a certain sound that they just can't stand. For me, it's nails on a chalkboard or someone sliding their fork over a plate. Horrible sounds!

My sister and my father have Synestesia. They see letters and words as colors.

I'm pretty sure I have some sort of mild synesthesia. I associate colors with some letters. Q is an orange-yellow color, E is dark green, Z is brown, J is neon green, and R is dark red. Also, when I smell lavender, I hear crashing waves, and I can't think of anything else off the top of my head but I do experience other things.
