Cancer. A word

Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Cancer. A word

Cancer. A word that brings mostly fear for those who don't have it, and even more fear for those who do. I had blood cancer and didn't really enjoy. I just want to know, do any other Cricketers have/had cancer? If so, what kind?

Eep! I'm glad you're better!!! I've always had this fear of getting cancer, probably because there are several people in my family who've had it. I haven't, and I hope I don't, but I'm here for you!!! I've never actually heard of blood cancer, is it rare?

Well, no, but same with Elizabeth, what's blood cancer?

Well, blood cancer is basically when the bone marrow (the stuff that makes blood) starts producing phoney white blood cells and they start acting against me and basicly killing me from the inside. There are actually two forms of the type of cancer I got, ALL and AML. AML is the worst of the two, and wouldn't ya know, I got it. They used chemotherapy on me to kill the bone marrow that was producing the bad cells, and that also killed my immune system. And after that my sister had to give me her stem cells to replace the bad ones. And I was actually one of the lucky ones who got remission the first time.

ALD, we're so sorry to hear about this. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers!

I just want to get somthing straight. I didn't post this so that everybody would pray for me (although I do appreciate them!), but merely to see if anybody else had had it. SO when I posted this, I wasn't asking for prayers (again, I do apreciate them:))

Well, cancer runs in my family, sadly.  My grandma died of cancer (sorry, probably not a nice thing to say when you have it- you're in my prayers by the way- but she had pancreatic cancer.)  My aunt just had surgery to get rid of her bladder cancer, four of my great aunts had breast cancer, but I think they all survived it, my neighbor had cancer twice, but she's survived them both, and a friend had cancer.

Actually my dad's grandpa had leukemia (the same cancer I had), but they say it's not genetic, so I'm not really sure how I got it.

Yes! Cancer is the scariest word I have ever heard. It brings bad and sad memories back and gives me bad dreams!

Last year (September 2009) my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. My mother held off on telling the kids until about a week or two before he died. So I was always at their house! *Starts crying* (no, for real!!!) Thankfully they lived next door to us! I wanted to spend every waking moment with him! My school MADE me go to counseling because of this.

Then he died September 15, 2009! CryCryCryCryCryCryCryCry

My mom and grandma had him cremated! When my grandma and I were alone she asked me if I wanted to see his ashes. I took a DEEEEEEEEEP breath and said yes. That was a HORRID mistake. Once I saw the ashes I broke down! I fell to the ground and started crying!!! My grandma took me to her bed and lay with me. She too started to cry and grieve with me!

Did I mention that it was a Monday? So I had to go to [public] school! I walked into school all teary eyed and just MISERABLE!!!!!!! My teacher asked me what was wrong. I said my grandpa died earlier that morning. Then a bunch a kids came up to me and said stuff like:

"What's wrong ya, big baby!"

I replied:"GO AWAY AND SHUT UP!!!!!!!! MY GRANDPA DIED THIS MORNING! IF IT WAS UP TO ME I WOULDN'T HAVE EVEN COME!!!! Then they just backed off.

Cancer is not the best. word! My grandpa was perfectly healthy. Cancer was the only thing wrong with his health!!!!!!!!!

@ALD: Wow... You've been through a lot! And you're only 11! When were you diagnosed? I'm so sorry.  You'll be in my prayers. You too, Vida!

Um, I've never had cancer (thank goodness) but my grandma's sister-in-law (who's in the kitchen right now) had cancer. I think she had chemo too because she lost most of her hair on her head, but I don't know what type of cancer she had. Also, my grandpa (who was the brother of my grandma's sister-in-law) had lung cancer and passed away because of it before I was born. So, yeah, I didn't really know him so it doesn't hurt that much. And my friend's mom has cancer and had a surgery where there was only a 50% chance of her surviving. Luckily she did survive. (I remember making a thread about this, asking for prayers and stuff.) So thank you everybody!

Oh boy, I think that ^ paragraph is very glum. Sorry. *gives hugs, chocolate, and presents* Merry Christmas!

Cancer is a serious disease, but diagnoses are being made earlier and treatments are getting better all the time. I know many cancer survivors who are now cancer free, leading normal, active lives. For over ten years I've been part of a Relay for Life team that raises money for the  American Cancer Society (research, education, help for patients, etc.). So let's focus on the advances and successful outcomes.
