What do people

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

What do people

What do people say when they meet you?

This is sort of random, but when people meet me, everything goes the same way..

Hello, um, Eka- Eki- Ekate..... Could you please tell me your name again?

Just call me Katia.

Katia, that's a pretty name. My name's so boring. Where are you from?

 Russia.

Ooh, really? Can you speak Russian?

  Yes.

 Say something in Russian!

 Um, why?

Because I want to hear something in Russian! Can you read in Russian?

 Yes.

Oooh, what are your favorite books in Russian?

 Grrr.

Alright, alright, but can you WRITE in Russian?!

You get the point. It's annoying, but kind of funny that they all say the same thing. And they can never pronounce my name.

Ekaterina, like Ekaterina Godeeva, the famous figure skater?

Um, no, Katia's just a popular Russian name. Thanks, though. And, yes, it is short for Ekaterina.

Normally people just ask my name and then they move on to my siblings. And then repeatedly call me "Haley", which is my sister's name. EVERYONE does that.

I'm not even kidding about the "Haley" thing, though. Somebody who didn't even know I had any siblings called me Haley on accident. When I corrected them, they said I just looked like a Haley.

Gah.

When I was younger and couldn't pronounce the letter r, people always thought I was called Melissa and not Martha. Usually I'd correct them but sometimes they just didn't get it.  This got to me so bad eventually I quit trying to correct them and let them call me Melissa.  On one infamous (to me, anyways) occasion, a coach on my swim team asked me my name and I started to spell it out.  "M-A-R-..."

So yeah.

Your name is beautiful, Tiffany.

When I meet people it's the usual:

Hey. I'm Elizabeth. Call me Elly. (That's what people call me. They think my name's too long plus -th is hard to say.)

Hi. My name's ...

And then at some point after they've heard my English, which is totally American with absolutely NO English accent:

Are you from England?

No, the US.

Cool! Say something in English.

Uh... I don't know what to say.

Say something really complicated.

Uh... (Then I say something pretty random.)

Awesome. Have you been to LA?

No.

NYC?

No.

Miami?

No.

Las Vegas?

No.

San Francisco?

No.

(I don't think I have to go on. You must get it.)

@Elizabeth M.

Have you been to Boston?:)

Normally, people call me Kira at first, with a long i.  Or they call me Kara, which just happens to be the name of my cousin and my friend.  I try to correct them and say it's Kyra, with a long e sound.

Since so many people get all confused, I'll answer to Kira, Kara, Kiera, and names like that.  It gets really confusing when I hang out with my friend Kara and someone says one of our names.  We never know who they're trying to talk to.

Me: Hi, I'm Sarah. *awkward smile*

Them: Hey, aren't you *place brother's name here* younger sister?

Me: *sighs* Yeah, I'm his sister.

Them: Really? How tall is he now?

Me: Oh, you know...6 feet 7 inches...

Them: Oh my gosh, really?! Does he play basketball?

Me: No...

Them: Oh, well then, bye, I guess.

Me: Bye.

Happens all the time. Either that or they comment on my last name or appearance, which is a pretty common Irish last name. Then they ask a bajillion questions about my last name, like "Why don't you use the original form of it?" and "How do you get your red hair?" Then they comment on my brother and walk away. All the time. But that doesn't happen much anymore, since I'm going to a school that he's never gone to so they don't know him.

People always think my name is Ellen.  Then they hear me say my name again and they say, "Oops, I've been calling you Ellen this whole time."  Most people misspell my name a lot.  I've seen:

-Hellen

-Helan

-Hellan

-Helun

-Hellun

Helen is the only way to spell Helen.  Having a weird German last name doesn't help.  ********** has been misspelled in the following:

-**********

-********

-*******

-**********

etc.

Me: Hi.

Them: What's your name?

Me: Ash.

O.o Seriously?

It's short for Ashley. I like Ash better.

Oh. Well, that's an interesting abbreviation.

*noncommital grunt*

~

Then, after they see how unsociable I'm being, they leave. (Used for those "adult parties" where there's wine, no people your age, and you can't hide in the flowerpots in a friendly game of hide-and-seek-then-run-around-arguing-about-the-rules. With my peers, I usually talk more.)

Chickuu says wyof.

~Ash out~

Stranger: Hello

Me: Hello

Stranger: What's your name?

Me: Katie, what's yours?

Stranger: [Insert name here]! What are those pins on your shirt?

Me: They're called tardigrades or water bears; they're microscopic animals that can survive a lot of amazing things.
