Chatterbox: Down to Earth

School begins again.

School begins again.

I know it's early, but for me it isn't, since my brother starts August first, and I start August 14th. This may seem very awful; I certainly thought so; but I actually like it, because in May I'm already eager for school to end (and it ends at the end of May as opposed to June) and in August I'm eager for it to start.

Anywoo! I'll be in eighth grade :O Which means that I'll be graduating in May! I'm excited, mostly because I got school supplies and I have, um, a thing for office supplies. Seriously. I love mechanical pencils, and note cards, and binders and spiral notebooks. Plus gel pens. Gel pens are awesome.

So anyway... What's everyone's school like? What are they excited about, what are they not as excited about? Yeah, going to click submit. Too many questions.

My school doesn't start until the day after Labor Day, but I'm okay with that because I still have a lot of AP homework.  I'm taking APUSH in the fall, and I have nine chapters of summer work to wade through.:/  I like my school because they have a lot of cool classes and the band and drama programs are great.   I'm really excited for this year because I'm taking creative writing as an elective!  I am not excited, however, to wake up at 5:20 every morning just to catch the bus.  Luckily, band is first period, so that wakes me up.

Wow, you start early! My school starts after Labor Day, so I have about another month of summer.

This may sound silly, but I actually don't know what my school is like. You see, I'm going into high school for the first time, a.k.a. freshman year. It's a public high school and I have never ever been in the public school system! You see, my old school was a private Catholic school, so it's going to be way different than what I am used to.

Earlier in the year, my class took a field trip to the high scool so we could see what the building is like. It is like a jungle compared to my small old school! Basically all we did there was get a talk about what to do and not to do, what to look forward to (they mostly based that on sports and clubs), talked to a few teachers, and ate lunch. The lunch was not really good, so I decided then and there to always pack cold lunch.

There are a few things I am excited for this year. I can't wait to take a foreign language, which will most likely be Spanish. I'm excited to meet new people and make new friends. In my old school, we didn't have many sports and clubs, so I'm excited to try out for volleyball and to join some clubs.  Most of all, I can't wait to go back to school to learn!

I'm also not excited about many aspects of going back to school. I heard from some people that there are some teachers that don't teach well. They give you a math worksheet and just expect you to know the math. I'm not looking forward to the lockers. They are so thin, I can't imagine how everyone is able to put their belongings in them! I also I'm not looking forward to finding my way across the maze of hallways with twists and turns. That is mostly all the things I am not looking forward to.

By the way, I know that Ruby M., Red and I are going to be freshman this year. So, does anyone have any tips/advice that they would like to give. Is anyone else going into high school this year?

I made the private Christian school to public school transition in gr. 6-7 and the first thing I noticed was how many more homeroom classes there were! My old Christian school was K-8 but my public school was 6-8. Both schools had a population of 350-ish but obviously the public one had way more people my age which was fun.

Other things that shocked me were the swearing, the (really rude) attitudes some students gave teachers, and the amount of homework. This might be different depending on your school and the environment but my Christian school was very sheltered and we barely got any homework. I was also really sleepy in public school, even though I woke up later and school ended earlier in my Christian school. But that could just be me.

Finally, because there were more people, there were cliques. I never really experiened cliques in my Christian school because there were so few students the same age so everyone was friends with everyone. They're not necessarily bad, but I felt sad because I wasn't one of the "cool kids" for a bit but eventually I grew to love my new friends and I stopped caring about the popular people, especially because they just sat around and talked and didn't eat ever.

Oh, and in eighth grade there were a bunch of drug problems in my public school. And people... have looser morals. Again, that could just be my school.

Don't let that scare you though! Going to a public school is an excellent opportunity to experience a different curriculum (my Christian school wasn't the most academically excellent) and other cultures and religions.

Yeah, one of the downsides of public school is people just don't have the same attitude towards people as at other schools.  There's always substance abuse stuff that pops up.  You just have to choose the right friends.  If you make friends with people you know would never be awful or do anything illegal, you often only hear about bad stuff, not witness it.  That's one good thing about public schools: they're big, so you have more of a chance of finding people you fit in with.

My school starts again August 25th. I'm going to have to wake up at 5 am once a week for battle of the books so that will be awful.

At my high school, the freshmen start on Monday the 19th and everybody else (including me) starts the 20th. Varsity tennis tryouts start the 14th, so we only have a few days to really get the team together before dual meets start, whereas last year we had almost two weeks. I'm looking forward to that. All the girls on varsity are really nice and we have pasta parties every so often and they're just a bunch of good kids in general. I'm also looking forward to most of my classes. Everything except AP American, actually, because I don't really like history. But I'm really excited for Chemistry A and Pre Calc A. This year, I'm also going to join Math Team, which I didn't do last year because of the tennis season, but I will do it this year. I might join some other clubs as well, like the Chinese Cultural Club or the Wheel throwing club.

SC, do you wanna be my AP American History buddy?  I'm taking it too, and I have a ton of summer work which is making me think I'm crazy for taking it.

For those of you going into high school, it is a little crazy at first when you're just getting used to it.  You get the hang of it though.  One tip I have is to make certain times to go to your locker.  If you know each day when the best time is to go, based on what classes are close to it, it's a lot less stressful.  It also helps making friends in each class.

Oh! I have American history, too, though my school only has AP for math an used to have it for LA but then didn't last year for...some reason. I like world history and ancient civilizations and medieval Europe and stuff, but here, I'll sum up all I know about American history:

Columbus showed up. Then there was Washington and the revolutionary war. Then Lincoln did stuff and there was a civil war. After the civil war, there was a civil rights movement, and after that, there were two world wars.

And I find it so easy to forget American history, too... Everyone else would have studied it in fifth grade, and those who didn't would have done it at other schools. I'll be hopelessly behind.

Also: I really need to stop referring to myself as Tiffany W.

I'm actually not sure where I'm going for school this year.  The middle school/high school for my school district is supposed to be really bad, and the only private school that's not religiously based is really flaky, so I'm not going to that place.  I think most likely I'll go to the middle school, but the only reason I'm not homeschooling is because of my friends, except one of my friends is considering homeschooling, so if he does it I might, too.

But the middle school sounds pretty CMAPT (for the non-nerdfighter, Crushing Monotony and Paralyzing Terror).  They told us there would be an advanced math class (which, in my experience, would be just tolerable) except they're not because of unknown mysterious reasons and some of the teachers from orientation sound super annoying.  Not anything I haven't dealt with before, but the funny thing is I deal better with school when there's more homework (don't ask me why) and apparently there'll be barely any.  My brain is slowly realizing the horror of it all.

Anyway, we have another orientation late August and start on September 9th, which is a lot later than normally.  And my birthday is the first Friday of the school year.

What's my school like? Awesome. It's technically a public school, meaning the state pays for it and not us, but it's a magnet school and works differently from the other schools in the district.

For one thing, it's what's known as an early college high school, so we're taking college classes, and by the time I graduate, I'll have an associate's degree and 2 years' worth of college credit. I'm going to be a sophomore. Last year, I took a goal-setting-type class and a computer class because they were required, and my biology class was also technically dual credit, but the college credit was for non-science majors, and since I plan to major in biology or something similar, I'm going to have to take the version for majors, and pretty much no college I know of gives you credit for both classes, so that doesn't count; I just took it because I wanted a more advanced biology class, and they didn't let freshmen take the majors' version. Next year, I'm going to be taking dual credit history and theater and kinesiology and I'm not sure if I'll get an elective, too. Unfortunately, it is kind of a lot of work, because they have to prepare us for college-level classes, and the teachers really take that seriously, so the workload gets kind of huge, and it gets extremely stressful. At least I'm not bored, though. Well, I was bored in geometry last year; everyone in the class was bored, whether they found it too easy or they just weren't interested. That was the exception, though; fortunately, I won't have that teacher this year.

Anyway, moving on... We don't have classes on Fridays at all. We go to school, and then we get on a bus and go to a place we picked from a list and volunteer. I get to go to a nature park, and we learn about the plants and animals and so on there as well as doing actual work, and I've gotten to see some really cool things! I love it.

Also, we have these things like Hogwarts Houses except they're not really chosen by personality (although it's not clear how random the "Sorting" is, especially since our school is really small and doesn't get that many new people each year), and there are way more because we are not a boarding school, so if they had as many people as the Hogwarts Houses, we would not be able to get to know everyone in them very well. There were ten, but the school is going to get way bigger this year, so they're having to split them in two for the first time, which is upsetting but necessary. Regardless, it's a pretty supportive environment, and we play games and stuff, and it's nice to get to know people in other grades... until they graduate, anyway.

We start in mid to late August; I don't recall the exact date. Part of me doesn't want to start school again because I'm enjoying not really having to do much of anything, but I'm looking forward to taking theater and maybe even a math class that's interesting for once (I have talked to the Algebra II teacher, and she sounds like she knows what she's doing, and I seem to get along with her easily! That hasn't happened since elementary school.), and I have been kind of lonely, so it'll be sort of nice to talk to people my own age again.

Also: I'm starting high school on September 2 and I'm really nervous but excited. I'm doing an enriched program and an extended French program (meaning: Geography and History are in French and a French class is mandatory all four years of school) and I haven't taken any enriched classes before so I'm really hopeful I won't fall asleep; math class has always been extremely boring for me and I've been looking for more of a challenge :p I'm also planning to try out for school teams and clubs, which I've never done before. I'm planning on xcountry, swimming, and track and drama. My middle school was a bit far from my home so I never did any after school activities but that will change!

And I love office supplies too! Last year I had a gel pen obsession but this year I've converted to clicky ballpoint pens in different colours :D
