Astonishing Facts!

Astonishing Facts!

Yesterday in Global Science, we watched this amazing video about the universe and atoms called Known Universe: The Biggest and Smallest. The movie was so interesting, that one of my friends and I talked about it nonstop for our whole lunch hour! Here are some of the facts I learned...

1. There are so many galaxies in the universe that if they all suddenly turned into peas, they would fill and overlow a sports arena like a NFL football stadium!!!!

2.Imagine that you are at a beach and you scoop up a handful of sand. You are holding approximitely 8 million grains of sand in your hand. Now imagine all the grains of sand in the world. There are more stars out in the universe than all the grains of sand on Earth!!!!

3. The Earth is about 93 million miles away from the sun. If we were 5% closer, the Earth would burn up and turn into a desert. If we were 10% farther, the Earth would be covered in glaciers.

4. A piece of hair is 300,000 atoms wide!

5) An atom is 99.99999999999% empty space, whichs that everything in the universe is empty space. That also means that we - humans - are 99.99999999999% empty space!!!

6) Now imagine a baseball bat and a baseball. If atoms are mostly empty space, then why don't the atoms pass through each other? The answer is because of electrons. Electrons have a strong repulsive force that repels other electrons, so the two objects can't pass through each other.

7) Get this! You are not touching your computer mouse, keyboard, ipad or chair right now! In fact, it is impossible to actually touch something! Let me explain, remember the strong repulsive force of electrons (aka magnetic field)? Well, when two objects come together that the objects hit the magnetic field. The objects molecules can not break through that magnetic field. Thus, it is impossible to ever really touch anything!!!

8) A nanometer is one billlionth of a meter. Your fingernails grow at a rate of one nanometer per second!

9) People are working on creating a cancer killing medicine out of nano-diamonds. They take are really really small diamond and coat it with a cancer killing drug. Then, they stick little protein pieces in the shape on a Y all over the diamond. When they inject the diamond into the blood stream, the diamond avoids healthy cells, but sticks to the tumor because of the irregular shape. The tumor allows the diamond to enter because it senses the protein. The tumor is programmed to let protein enter to help the tumor grow, but when the diamond enters, the cancer killing drug dissolves. This kills the tumor!

So, those are my facts! The show is really amazing, and I'd suggest that if you found any of the facts interesting, you'd watch it.

If anyone has any other astonishing facts (they can be about anything, not just the universe), please post them on this thread.

Here are ten random facts that I found quite interesting:

1) There are about 3,000 lightning flashes on Earth every minute.

2) In Italy, you can buy fresh pizza from a vending machine!

3) If you traveled as fast as a car on the highway, it would take nearly three days and nights to reach the Earth's core.

4) Australia's Great Barrier Reef can be seen from space.

5) A farmer in Lebanon grew a 25-pound potato. That's the weight of two bowling balls!

6) There are more pets in Japan than children.

7) Earth's temperature rises slightly during a full moon.

8) If humans came in as many sizes as dogs, we'd range from three to eighteen feet tall.

9) One of the shortest wars ever lasted 38 minutes.

10) All of the people on Earth could crowd into half the country of Belgium.

So those are my random, interesting facts! If I come across more facts, I'd post them on here!

This isn't really THAT astonishing, but try it! I came SO CLOSE
you can't wrap your hand around your elbow, and make your fingers meet! you never give it much though until you hear it.
