Chatterbox: Down to Earth

My dad said

My dad said that studies showed middle-graders in public school have trouble identifying basic animals, like a frog! I am a homechooler, so I wouldn't know the truth of that statement. Everyone, tell me it's false, or our generation is coming to ruin!

Yes, exactly!

(Exactly what?)

WOW!!!!! I didn't know that so many of you were homeschoolers!!!!:) I've been homeschooled my whole life, and can't imagine doing anything else. I'm very suprised, (and VERY shocked), that some middle graders don't even know a frog when they see one! But don't worry Emily, I don't think that our generation is coming to ruin.:) For two reasons: 1. It didn't say ALL public schooled middle graders, or else we'd have a real problem. 2. As you must know by now, there are LOTS of homeschoolers out there, like you and me, who DO know what a frog is.:)

Oh, no, America's going towards ruin DANG fast. See Ancient Rome, just before the fall. Compare to modern-day America. H'm...

And yes, I know what a frog is; I've dissected them on numerous occasions (along with worms, squid, (sheep) eyes and brains... Mmm brains...) And that was all in grades 5-8.

I guess you're kind of right, but not ALL of America is going to ruin! Instead of thinking of all of the things that ARE going to ruin, try and think of all of the things that aren't! You'll see that that's a pretty long list too.:) But, I think that the comparison to Ancient Rome and modern-day America was pretty smart.:)

I have issues with optimism, 'kay? :) Compliments, too... Odd.

Funnily enough, my friend Ashlee and I came up with the comparison during one of our strange work conversations at the cinema...

Me: The trouble with America is that it's becoming corrupted, and the system is going dysfunctional. Like Rome.

Ashlee: Yup, America's gonna fall like Rome...

Me: Only heavier, because the people are overweight. ((true story))

Anyway, in World History this year Mr. Davis was all, "I bet you guys have never thought about the similarities between modern America and Ancient Rome just before the collapse of the empire!

Well, actually, Davis... lol.

I bet if you ask an average 5 year old they will know what a frog is!

I've been private schooled since 1st grade (I'm in 7th now) and my both my schools (I used to live in Ohio, now in Antwerp) have been below standard, according to my parents, and everyone knows what a frog is.  My 4-year-old sister does!!  I think that is an untrue statment.  The only thing that would make me think maybe it is true is that there are adults who still think Bill Clinton is president, so there could be kids who don't know what a frog is.  Anyway, who knows!!

I went to PS (public school) from grades k to 3 and then was HS (homeschooled) from grades 4 to 6. I am now a 7th grader in PS. I don't understand why all these HS think people who go to PS are dumber. All my friend that have been PS for their whole life are very smart, maybe even smarter than me.

To TNO,

I think part of the reason your friends complain about reading 8 pages a day is because thay get less time to play during the day.

Oh and all my PS friends including me know what a frog is.

We even know what a porpoise is!!!!!

Does anyone else go to an alternative school (if you call it that) ? I do. I homechool and go to ____ heh heh. Won't name it.  I take a few classes there, starting in late September. Drama, for instance.

Not even particularly hard pages either - double spaced, 14 TNR font... The sort of thing I could read in about 20 seconds. Really.

I'm rereading Les Mis this year, and people will go "WHOAH! THOSE PAGES HAVE IMPOSSIBLY TINY FONT!"

To which I will invariably reply: "No, your books just have ridiculously LARGE font. And are double spaced, for some reason."

...I really loathe the people who flip through the delicate pages of my precious 40-year-old (library) book, and somehow seemed surprised when I yell at them not to rip the paper. I mean, hello, you can rip NEW books doing that, how about a book that's multiple decades old? Yeesh.

I'm going to stop ranting now.

I could have gone to an alternative school, but I decided to go to public school instead.

*looks offended* What? How can that be? IT IS NOT TRUE. And also, just because you're a homeschooler doesn't mean your smarter than everyone else! It just means you have cooler parents *winks*. But, at my school, they teach us stuff I learned years ago when I lived in England. And I also learn more from Mythbusters and Animal Planet than in school. I am really annoyed at this.

Hey!  For all you public schoolers who wouldn't admit to not being able to tell the difference, the October issue has a poem telling you how to!  I wonder if they wrote it because of us?...
