Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Natural Health feed!

Natural Health feed! I noticed that there is not a feed to talk about health food, supplements, natural beauty, organic food, GMOs, etc. I think about this topic a lot, and wondered if any other CBers were into that type of thing. Don't get me wrong, I love cookies, bacon (we actually raised our own recently and are eating that), pancakes, cheeseburgers, and all other junk foods too. But I hate being sick, I feel tired frequently, really don't want Cancer or diabetes, and have ADHD, so any foods that can help me be happy and well (and look better haha) are awesome. Feel free to talk about any health related thing you want! Talk about medical conditions you are finding natural remedies for, natural skin and hair, natural weight management, anything ya'll want!

I've been gluten free before, because I have ADHD and it can help, but I'm not right now. I'm thinking I should jump back on the bandwagon, because I'm super distractable lately. I'll get back on here later!

My family and I are very conscious about what we put into our bodies, so we eat only organic fruits and veggies (some types of produce don't have to be organic, but we try to always get organic), and try to avoid GMO's, BHT (a preservative), and a dough conditioner that Subway was using that shoe companies put on the soles of shoes to make them durable (I can't remembr the name of it; it starts w/ an A, and it's a reeeaaaalllllllyyy long word). We also rarely eat at McDonald's or any other fast-food restaurant.  I am lactose intolerant, so I drink almond milk. Actually, here's what I have to eat on most days:

Breakfast:

usually cold cereal (I prefer the brand Kashi) with almond milk, occasionally oatmeal/cream of wheat, fruit (apple, orange, applesauce, blueberries, strawberries, it depends), grape/orange juice, and chocolate almond milk.

Lunch:

usually a sandwich (turkey, ham, egg salad, tuna fish, it depends) w/out cheese (cause I'm lactose intolerant), sometimes soup (beef stew, chicken noodle, it depends), usually almond milk, and sometimes V8 juice or grape juice.

Dinner:

chicken breast, grilled chicken/steak, ham, spaghetti, hot dogs, hamburgers, steak, it depends, peas, corn, green beans and kidney beans, it depends, almond milk

Dessert:

sometimes hot chocolate (made w/ almond milk of course), dark chocolate, sometimes animal crackers, sometimes candy canes (seasonal)

Snacks:

sometimes a little cheese (some cheeses are very low in lactose), occasionally yogurt (if I haven't had any stomach pain for a while), corn and potato chips, goldfish, breadsticks, healthy cereal fruit bars

So as you can see, my family eats very well; we even buy healthy cat food for our cat! :P lol!

Nice to see some non-vegetarians that also care about their health! That's also about how my family is (not complete health freaks, but health concious)

Unfortunately, Kashi switched over to GMO foods about a year or so ago. I don't know why, but I heard it was because there was a new owner. Some of the products aren't GMO (see the USDA Organic) and some are.

Yeah, I noticed that only some of their foods have the non-GMO symbol, but I thought I saw something about them phasing out GMOs by the end of 2015. I guess I'll look into that, but we buy a lot of cascadian farms and haven't bought kashi in several months.

So, storytime, peeps. About a month ago, there was a subsitute teacher for Science and we had to answer these questions to a video on GMO. I answered most of the questions with 'GMO is horrible, there's nothing good about it' in the chart and such. I told the subsitute teacher this but he was all "I've been a scientist part of my life and there is no proof GMOs are bad." Ugh *rolls eyes* I honestly thought I'd get in trouble because most people around me think GMOs are ok or don't even know about them. Pretty frustrating...

Ugh! That's got to be a pain for you, to have to deal with a teacher who is less informed than you. Hmm, let's see, let's mix the organisms of plants around with other bizarre things, so that they can KILL the tiny pests that try to eat them and destroy the intestines and fertility of larger animals that eat the feed. Then we can send teachers into schools to tell them there's "No proof GMOs are bad". Then, when their children have bizarre tumors and infertility, they can decide for themselves (but it will be too late, muahhhahahaha!) Well, I'm getting a bit cynical here, but I really can't see how to end the giant that is Monsanto.

Lets just say my dad can be a health freak- I mean, our pancakes have hemp and/or spelt in them:) In my family dad is a vegan, and my mom, brother and I are vegetarians. I've NEVER eaten meat- and don't want to.

I also have allergies- technically, Birch Pollen Oral Allergy Syndrome. Basically, it means I can't eat most nuts, and I can't have certain fruits raw (once they're cooked the proteins change and then its safe for me to eat) The nuts I don't mind, but not being able to eat an apple or plum can be REALLY hard.

We grow a lot of our own food- carrots, tomatoes etc- and we also do PYO a lot, them process the food for winter smooties and applesauce.

I could go on FOREVER about this stuff, but I'll stop now:)

On a different note, post what you had for dinner last night (or the last dinner you ate, if you are reading this on a different date).

Here's mine!  1/2 an organic sweet potato (from my garden!), sausage that we raised, and organic salad mixture from Sam's (with homemade dressing). We had Rice Krispie treats for dessert.

PS Has anyone ever tried homeade marshmallows? I love making Rice Krispie treats, but I hate corn syrup.

Tonight I had homemade chicken fingers and french fries. So yummy... and last night I had grass-fed roast beef and potatoes.

Last night: Beef roast stew with potatoes and celery, homemade whole wheat bread (my sister and I made it), grass-fed cheese (disclaimer: we did not make this cheese), and apple halves.  And kit-kats (*insert sarcasm* soooo healthy)

@ Pearl:

My dad is totally into the farming thing (he dreams about being a pioneer in the whole organic/permaculture movement!), and he's a fan of Joel Salatin, too!
