I'm Muslim, and

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

I'm Muslim, and

I'm Muslim, and it makes me so mad the way some people treat me because of the way I dress. I wear long skirts and a headscarf, and I'm proud of it. It's just that some people are so rude. Once, my mom and I were walking in a store, and a woman passed us. As she was walking, she said, "You don't have to dress like this in America."

My mom stopped and said, "Excuse me? Why don't you come here and say that?"

"Okay," said the woman, and she walked over, looking huge and vicious. My mom set her straight and explained to her our religion, and afterwards, the woman gave us each a hug and apologized. "You've really opened my eyes," she said.

I'm as American as all of you. My dad is from the Middle East, but my mom is completely American. She was raised as a Christian, and she converted when she was 18. A few years later, she met my dad and married him.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but what do you guys think of Muslims?

Aw, you guys are the best.

@MapleSyrup: You're comment was wonderful! I'm so glad you're my friend.

@CayketheCook: I know exactly what you mean. Everyone thinks we're oppressed, but we're not! I CHOOSE to dress the way I do. And you're right about lots of people being nice. Once, my whole family was shopping and we passed an old lady in the store. She stopped us and said, "What a beautiful family. And you girls just look beautiful in your scarves."

@123456789: I'm happy to expllain! Muslims believe in the same God as Christians and Jews. Our main difference is that we believe we should worship God alone. Women wear headscarves and dresses so we can be modest. It is NOT because we're trying to oppress women! Lots of people think that in Islam, a man is twice as important as a woman. NOT TRUE!!!!! We believe that the husband/father is the head of the family, and women should be treated with courtesy and respect. Lots of people get this twisted, including Muslims, and they think men are better than women.

@Katydid: Yes, we believe in God, teh same God you believe in. We just don't believe Jesus was the Son of God. We believe he was a prophet. And it's great you're so proud of your religion.

Thank you everyone!

And just to clear it up, Jews believe in G!d and they believe that Jesus was a person who existed, but not that he was the son of G!d. Actually, all three religions have their own set of ten comandments! They all stem from the same thing. And then, they are also very different.

I don't mind Muslims or Christians or whomever else... I just find it strange that some people actually believe that there is an ethereal being in the sky who watches over us and formed our species.

That seems really weird to me. I can understand the concept, but I can't understand how people actually believe that it's true.

I'm using anonymous because I don't want to be yelled at for my honest opinion.

Muslims are very good people, the way they dress insn't strange. Some people are just rude and sometimes mean. Don't let it get to you! It's very good to be modest. I'm personaly christian, and I don't know a lot of Muslims,  but I know you and Cayke, and you guys are awesome! God bless!

Muslims are fine! I am a Christian, but that doesn't mean I think I'm superior or cooler or whatever. Some of the main rules of my faith are "love everyone" and "be humble."

Seriously, I'm not calling anyone out, but saying Christians are haughty is really mean and stereotypical.

"What religion are you?"

"Christian."

"So you hate homosexuals?"

"What? No! I just disagree-"

"Christians are supposed to hate homosexuals."

"No, actually, we're supposed to love everyone."

"But-"

(I storm off)

I don't beleive in God. I find the idea of some all-powerful being watching over me at all times. I celebrate Christmas and stuff because the rest of my family is Christian. Also, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRANSGENDER PEOPLE. I know a girl who is transgender (born a boy and becoming a girl) and that is OK. I have nothing wrong with them, it's just that I myself am happy the way that I am.

Sorry!

I am blond to, just to let Y'all know. My apologies, i didn't mean to insult anyone. I know all of you are smart, and I wasn't thinking when I posted that. It is basically a saying, not a very good one, I don't tend to get insulted by it but some people do. My brother says, "Are you blond?" A lot to me, and I guess it is rubbing off. Sorry!

I support:

-Anti-racism

-Anti-sexism

-Freedom of religion

-LGBT rights.

I believe that everyone is a person and should be treated as such, without being judged on their race, appearance, religion, gender (boy, girl, OR transgender boy/girl), or homo- or heterosexuality.

But we prooobably should not get into the last subject.
