Serious Question:

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Serious Question:

Serious Question: AEs

So, I have not been on the CB for some years now. And upon returning today, I have noticed that numerous people are talking about having and/or getting rid of AEs. So I looked up the definition, and I saw an alter ego is a separate personality of a person. So my question remains: what is an AE considered on CB and how does it work? Does it mean the same thing as the actual definition?

Also, after reading through some recent threads today, I have discovered that many people are complaining about the number of AEs a person has. Another question this leaves me with is why? Again, I don't know much on AEs, but I am curious why. And is this official, on the limits, or not? For if an AE is what I think it is in CB, then I might like to have 1 or 2.

Thank you for helping, I am not new to CB, just... back a century or so. In a way of saying it simply.

There is no rule to how many AEs you can have. No body is the ruler of the CB here, Ash. The only people who can make the rules are the admins

Hmm. When I first heard of an "alter ego" (this is way back before the CB), people used it to describe the "normal" identity of a superhero.

So I think the term differs.

Here, it's not really a different personality, but more of a hmm . . . "side trait of your main personality."

For instance,  if you're main personality is calm and mature, but ever so often you wanna break out in just a little craziness, that's where the AE comes in.

Basically, we all have a fun, crazy side, and since we wanna keep that down and not show it all the time, we've put that into our AE. They seem like different people, but they're still one of us.

Personally (this is just my opinion),  I think 2 AE would be nice.

Why more than one? Well, let's just say there are different definitions for crazy . . .

And if you're curious, I only have obe AE. I don't use her much, only in ski lodges.

I've learned to keep my crazy down...

Thank you so much, MapleSyurp and Novelist. That makes much more sense. Having come back, I have begun to notice many new ideas. They are all amazing, but very confusing I suppose. But I do understand now, what you mean.

@Novelist, for most people's AEs do they join in on random conversations and threads as they are writing as well? And while I have noticed many people announcing they are getting rid of AEs, should you announce you are getting one, and sort of who that AE is on personality?

Most AEs do join in on conversations, but in general, you have to judge whether or not it is appropriate for them to. They are not welcome on every thread, and the subject matter of it is usually a pretty good indicator.

You do not have to announce getting one, but many people like to.

Hi, Ashlee! Nice to meet you.

A while ago we had a bit of an arguement over that very question. AEs don't really pop in at random times; the thread has to say (or at least imply) that Alter Egos are allowed before they can comment. That, or you have to ask the creator of the thread if AEs are allowed. They also don't comment on RPs, unless it's an AE/CAPTCHA one.

Most people do announce when they're getting an AE. Usually, yes, it includes a personality, how they speak (ie bold, bold italic, or italic), and then a little something from the AE themselves.

Hello, nice to meet you as well! Unfortunately, I actually did run across the AE argument yesterday. It sounded pretty bad and apparently is still the big topic now for people. Thank you for your help, though. I might consider getting an AE in time. It is not guaranteed I will be on much, with school and things like that. But for at least now I am present.

Oh hi!

Nice to hear from you! Did you go by Ashlee way back when?

Hello! Yes, I was actually looking back at my old threads and I did go by Ashlee as well. But most of the time I would talk about NaNoWriMo which I was doing at the time.

It's good to have you back, Ashlee! :D

As far as I know, AEs (Alter Egos) on the Chatterbox are characters created by the Chatterboxer to portray the creator's darker personality traits, such as cynicism, sarcasm, pessimism, or insanity. Or anything else. Some AEs are also snooty and superior, some sweet-natured, and many sensitive and easily hurt or offended. The general purpose of an AE seems to be sheer humor, and creativity. Although they will occasionally get out of hand. But-- C'est la vie! ;D
