Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Note from Admin

Note from Admin

Cricket’s mission is to promote reading, writing, creativity, and community among all kids ages 9 to 14. We want the Chatterbox to be a welcoming place where everyone who visits feels encouraged to join in the stories and discussions.

Not every topic on which you have passionate convictions is appropriate for this forum. Because of the range of age and maturity levels of kids who come to the Chatterbox, it remains our policy that this is not the place for discussions of gender identity issues and other controversial issues. Our older magazine for teens, CICADA, hosts a forum called the Slam, at cicadamag.com/theslam, with active discussion of gender issues within a very creative and supportive community.

A second CB policy is that posts must be respectful and never hurtful. Disagreements are expected, but recently admins have had to delete, or leave unposted, a number of comments that, perhaps unintentionally, crossed the line of what we will allow. The admins become especially concerned when comments, whether meant to or not, have the effect of suppressing or shaming who another CBer is. That is not allowed.

The stories and role plays CBers create are mostly tales of adventure and light romance that can be enjoyed by kids in the full age range of the Chatterbox. A third fundamental Chatterbox policy is that stories about sexual themes, or with scenes of disturbing violence, drug abuse, etc., will not be posted.

These polices help us make the Chatterbox an exceptionally great community of readers and friends.

In creating the character DJ, Gared did not violate any of the above policies, and so his character was, and is, allowed. We hope that other CBers, while respecting the sensitivities of the broader Chatterbox community, will also feel comfortable creating characters as they wish to imagine them.

The Chatterbox is a big space with room for all. The admins will continue to monitor posts and comments closely, and there will always be borderline cases of what’s appropriate. The admins will try to make judgments that are in the best interests of the CB community and of individual CBers.

This thread will be left open for a few days for everyone to process what has been said. Then—following the first policy above—it will be closed to new comments so that everyone can get back to creating stories and discussing books with their friends.

Glad this is finally over. Thanks for taking the time out of your (probably very busy) lives to come up with a solution!

Sounds like a good agreement. I would definitely check the Slam out but I'm a year too young... so far, this sounds to me like

-LGBT characters are allowed as long as they aren't, well, mean to people...

-No arguments that attack people.

Sounds legit!  ^w^

This is a wonderful decision, Admins, and very fair! Thank you for taking the time to talk about this manner and think of such a good solution.

Oh. Okay.

Thank you for this, Admins, and I really do appreciate all the time and effort you put into making this decision.

I support diversity.

*Silently turns away for a moment and wipes eyes*

Does this mean goodbye, then, Cho? And Daisy? Will you really leave?

This may be an obvious question, but, what are the rules for creating a character?

You just describe the character.

Thank you Admins for sorting this out. We are so lucky to have admins like you!

I would just like to say that my AE's and I will not be participating in the "same gender" crush thing; but we will not judge anyone for doing that either.

Thanks again for coming to a reasonable and fair conclusion.

Thank you.  I am somewhat disappointed in the outcome but not in the CB.  No not at all. Its in America and how far we've come from our forefathers.  *sigh*

But I will respect you decision and I think we all should.  Even if we don't agree with it.  We should still stand up for what we believe in.   But I will respect diversity in all its forms and beauties.

Cho, Daisy, can I bring up a proposition?  Maybe you can leave the rest of the chatterbox but stay behind on BaB? Maybe even this Month but just, I dunno make a thread or something that you can work on together.  A single write or something.   You don't even have to reply to anything we say, just knowing that you're still here is enough.   And I know you're probably gonna say I can still talk to you on nano but my account got deleted and I can't get it back in the site refreshes and all my stuff is gone for good.   Not mentioning a bunch of CBers can't do nano.

So there.  Please think about it.  Talk it over but I'm not gonna watch another piece of CB be torn apart without me trying to stop it.

My thoughts exactly, Joan. I disagree with same-gender romance but agree with the admins' conclusion.

Hi Admins, I know this has been said so many times, but I fully agree with everyone who has said this. You all are underappreciated. You are our guardian angels, in the best of ways, ensuring that everyone gets the best experience in the CB. I really, really appreciate that, and that's one of the reasons I do my best to stay on the CB, even though I'm on the brink of the intended age limit. You don't find such a controlled, screened, beautifully caged environment on many other websites such as this. So thank you. Honestly, honestly, thank you.

In the words of Joan, "Thanks again for coming to a reasonable and fair conclusion." (Joan, I think you summed it up personally)

Thanks Admin. My AEs are going into stasis, and will likely never return again to the CB. I might use Ms. Elton in a story of my own, but they are staying off of AE threads. I'm possibly leaving the CB. Cho and Daisy, I'm sad you're leaving, but I'm so glad I've been friends with you. I respect your deciscion Admins, but I'm proud of my beliefs, and I'm willing to stand up for them, and no matter what anyone says, that won't change.

Thank you for taking the time to make a decision. I will not say anything about my views, but please know that I respect your dedication to fairness.

Thank you, Starbringer.
