Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Odd local words

Odd local words and phrases.

This is the thread for unique sayings (not a weird state laws thread).
For example: here, it seems like everyone always says "the crows get bigger every year." Also, as I'm in the country, people are always saying: "this is the wettest (or driest) spring ever!" Or "this is the coldest/hottest winter ever!" besides that, though, I "go down cellar" rather then go into the basement, eat grinders (that's a New England thing) rather than...er...subways? And eat (oh, delicious of delicious!) creemees (or cremes, or creeemeees, or creemeees, or cremees, etc: the very first one is the most usual, but "creme" is generally the way tourist-traps spell it) which is soft-serve ice cream everywhere else. Anyone?

Um, sayings? I live in NY, and I can't think of a single thing. I mean, sure, we all have different phrases n stuffes, but nothing unique to the state. Oh well. Any other New Yorkers out there?

I'm a native New Yorker (upstate, not NYC), but I haven't lived there for a long time.

@ Admin who said about living in NY

Cool! I think that we're the only NYers on here. I live outside of NYC.

Ugh. I'll sometimes catch people around here

saying "everbody" instead of "everybody". Not

everyone does, but when I hear that it just

aggravates me.

This is copied and pasted from a wicked Mainah' who had too much time on her/his hands:

Ayuh: Yup. Sure. Okay. That's right. You Bet.

Bug: Lobster

Cah: A four wheel vehicle, not a truck.

Chowdah: Chowder

Crittah: Any furry animal

Finest Kind: The very best

From Away: Not from Maine

Pot: Lobster Trap

Steamers: Clams

Wicked: Very. To a high degree, such as wicked good, wicked bad, wicked exciting, etc.

It's not a local saying, but where I used to live, Ohio, and around that area, everyone always called Oregon, OreGON, like GON, rhyming with the name RON.  I even called it that.  But now that I live out here by Oregon, everyone calls it OreGIN, rhyming with WIN.  I FINALLY got used to calling it that.  I'm still not sure which one is right, though!!

Well, here in "sunny" old california, we say OraGN.  Well, you say the "I" sound, but so fast that it's practically not there.  Hmm... very hard to explain.  You'd have to hear it to know what I'm talking about.  :D

Yes, it is hard to explain.  I guess everyone says it different!  I wonder which one is right??  Or is there a right one?? Hmmmmmmmm...

I, personally, pronounce it OreGIN. It sounds more

correct to me than OreGON, probably because that's

the way I've always heard it pronounced, but like you

said, all kinds of people say things differently. Mainly

depending on where they live and the way they've

heard things pronounced.

I'd probably trust the people who actually live in the state. I always used to pronounce it OreGON, but then I found out the people from Oregon pronounce it OreGIN. I've said OreGIN ever since. Same with New Orleans: I used to pronounce it New OrlEEns, but then I met someone from there, and she told me it was pronounced New OrlIns, with the emphasis on the "or." And now I pronounce Nevada with a "cat" "a" in the middle (I didn't before).

Well, my uncle lives in Oregon, and he pronounces it pretty much the same way as me.  :)

I've heard both pronunciations of New Orleans, and I say Nevada the same as you.  :)

What do other people call meals. I call the meal in the middle of the day Dinner ( the main or largest meal of the day), and the meal at the end of the day Supper. I also sometimes call the meal in the middle of the day lunch, but not very often.

As for other sayings I am not aware of any main ones to wright down right now.
