Here ye, here ye!*blows trumpet* The prince is giving a balllll....

Welcome to the Reeeeenaissance, with poets, painters, and--oops, I meant welcome to the Unofficial Musical Theater Chat Thread, so musical theater lovers, unite!

Here we can blab noooooon-stop about musicals, soundtracks we've been listening to, shows we've seen, shows we want to see/listen to, shows we've been in, dance classes, funny stories, composers, actresses, actors, techies, and random musical references. Our love for theater is unlimited. Unlimited...my future is unlimited...

By the way, do you guys recognize some of the references?

*****

So, recently me my family and I saw a regional production of Into the Woods, and I LOVED it!!! The woman who played the Witch was terrific, and had a totally different voice type than that of the original cast soundtrack, so it was a cool experience. Cinderella had a lovely voice, and I enjoyed the Baker's Wife a lot. Milky White was funny. The set design was also cool--they had a creative way of doing transition scenes, and the set was almost constantly changing slightly, usually the alignment of the trees.

I had already really gotten into Into the Woods months before. I really love that soundtrack. I've listened to it over and over and over again. My favorite songs are the opening song (Prologue), I Know Things Now, Giants In the Sky, and Your Fault/Last Midnight. And No One Is Alone--it's a beautiful, truthful song, and it can be really powerful. The performance of it that we saw nearly brought me to tears--it made me think of a lot of things.

If I had to pick two favorites, it would definitely be No One is Alone and the Prologue. I love that one--hearing all the different parts, how they switch and intertwine, and some parts get so exciting. It's one of my favorite opening songs ever. Hey, that's yet another thing to talk about: opening songs.

It's the opening song

It doesn't have a title, no!

And it's not very long

But it's the starting point of our musical

And here's the first scene of our musical!

So, what do you have to talk about? What musicals have you listened to or seen recently?

SOMETHING ROOTTTTTTTEENNNN!!!!!

Something Rotten is one of my FAVORITE shows!!!
I also love Into the Woods, Assasins, Sweeny Todd, Heathers... everything is amazing.
I have never actually seen a professional theatre production (other than a Christmas Carol productiomn at a local Regional theatre) which is really sad, but eh. I'll get to it some day.
All of the classics are good, so Sound of Music and Gypsy and Evita and A Little Night Music and stufflike that is incredible, but I also love newer musicals like Hmailton and Wicked and Something Rotten.
Have you heard the ORC for If/Then? It's SO good! I love the songs The Moment Explodes and the song Always Starting Over (though that one swears, so don't listen if you are uncomfortable with swearing)]
Anything Sondheim is spot-on! I like School of Rock and Phantom, but Webber isn't my favorite. Stephen Shwartz hasn't dissapointed.
Anastasia i going to Broadway!! Ramin Kamiloo is playing the villain, Dreb, so yay for that! Charlie and the Chocoate Factory is coming as well, with Christian Borle as Wonka (SQUEAL!!!) Okay, okay, I'm really busy and shouldn;t have gotten distacted. I will come and talk later.

Yeah, same about liking a variety of musicals. Some people I know are bound to one type of musical, but not me.

I've listened to a bunch of songs from If/Then, although I really only know two by heart: No More Wasted Time and Some Other Me. I'm familiar with Always Starting Over. On a side note, people are sometimes iffy about Idina Menzel, saying she's "basic" because you know, Wicked and Frozen. But I think she's very talented. I like her best as Elphaba on Wicked and Mimi in Rent (Broadway), and she seems good in this. What did you mean by ORC? Did you mean OCR? (Original Cast Recording.)

I'm fine with swear words in musicals--to be honest, it's an accepted fact of life in musicals. Songs from musicals are the only songs with swear words that I'm allowed to have on my iPod XD I don't do much of my listening on the iPod anyway--it's too tedious to put stuff there. Online is where I get most stuff.

YAS I LOVE STEVEN SONDHEIM TOO *high fives* Who doesn't? My favorite is Into the Woods, but I love Sweeney Todd too, and West Side Story (which technically he wrote the lyrics to). And I've heard some nice songs from Follies (Losing My Mind)and Company--"Being Alive." I LOVE that song, one specific version though. You really should listen to that song, but make sure to listen to the Barbara Streisand cover, from her Broadway album. Listening to it right now. :D

As for Webber, I really like his musicals too....Phantom of course being my favorite, but I also like Cats and Evita. I haven't listened to a lot of School of Rock.

Yes, I heard about Anastasia on Broadway a couple months ago, and watched the trailer, and I'm excited! I know a girl who's going to see it. I loved the movie version, and I always thought to myself, "This would make a great musical." And now it is! I hope they add some new songs to it in addition to the other ones. I love Once Upon a December, and I love singing Journey to the Past--the vocal range is great, and I love the optimistic/ballad-ness of it.

Ooh, didn't hear about Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

A composer I've been getting into recently is Jason Robert Brown. Contemporary. Have you listened to any Last Five Years music?

YASSSS!!!

Last Five Years!

I'm so glad i can actually talk to someone about musical theatre.

Yeah, I meant to type OCR but I was in a hurry, like I said.

You know what would make an amazing musical? The Princess Bride!! I'd love to see it as a spoof, so Inigo Montoya singing a hilarious song about killing his father. Sort of Spamalot-esque.

*stands up and claps* I can totally imagine a Spamalot-ish Princess Bride. There could be such cool songs of individual characters. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

MUSICAL THEATER

*fangirls*

My school is doing a musical for the spring theatere session, and I'm SO pumped for audtions and they're not even till late January! It was written by a senior named Lexie and is kind of an Odyssey spinoff...? It's a little confusing, but Greek mythology and singing. I'm in. I want a major part (doesn't everyone). I'm only a seventh grader, though, so we'll see.

It might be kind of weird, but one of my favorite parts of theater is being backstage, you know? During a show, in the greenroom, it's the coolest feeling in the world: Everyone is so emotionally charged and excited and there's so much awesome energy.

Plus, it's totally great when someone asks, "What time is it?" And one person starts singing, "Summertime, it's our vacation!" and another person is all, "SHOWTIME! Like I said!"

And that first person never ends up finding out the time because the musical theater kids at my school don't have watches.

I know what you mean about the backstage thrill. Actors getting ready, techies totally on it, waiting, excited...

The watch thing is really funny! Those kids are literally me. Unfortunately that wouldn't really happ at my school because *sheds tear* the theater class isn't really made of any musical theater kids. There's like four, including me. But we're slowly starting to infect the others.*cackle*

YESSSS! FINALLY!

I have so many favorite musicals. The Sound of Music, Annie, Fiddler of the Roof (I actually saw this one, not a movie) and Newsies are probably my top four. I love the different time periods! I love the songs! I love the dancing! I love everything!

My friend is in a lot of musicals, which gives me an excuse to go see them. She was in Elf the Musical, which we just recently went to watch. (That is one of the best Christmas movies ever, by the way, if you haven't seen it you need to watch it now) Also, we saw the kid's version of Oliver! because one of my mom's students was in it. I thought it was great, for being put on by kids younger than ten! They were much better at singing and dancing than I could ever be.

I love, love, love Fiddler on the Roof. It taught me a lot about the Jewish faith, and the songs have kind of this really cool sound to them, I don't know how to describe them. Klezmer, maybe? It has a hilarious main character, and awesome character development. I give it a 5 out of 5!

Also, Newsies! I honestly love everything about this movie, especially the time period (late 1800s-early 1900s) Who wouldn't love a gang of funny New Yorker boys who sing and dance and go on strike? Not me, that's for sure.

(Also I have a bit of a crush on Spot in the movie *runs to Santa Fe in embarrassment* (that was a Newsies reference, by the way)

I really want to see Hamilton. *sighs...*

Newsies! I am with you in the crushing-on-Spot-Conlon-in-the-movie-then-running-off-to-SANTA FE! MY OLD FRIEND! I CAN"T SPEND MY WHOLE LIFE DREAMIN'! Though after all, that's all I seem inclined to do.

Heh. Heh. Forget that I did that.

Race is also super cute.

Oh goodness. I have really fangirled myself into a corner. XD. Can't be helped. Why is my name Brooklyn Newsie again? NEVER FEAR, BROOKLYN'S HERE! Argh! I'm hopeless.

Anyway, for old time's sake, I'm thinking about starting a Newsies RP (like the first RP I ever made), so when I make it, anyone feel free to join.

Someone help me. XD.

And have y'all ever got the happy feeling when you've gotten your friend obsessed with Hamilton, and now have someone to obsess over the lyrics, characters, and the story with?

Yep, I love musicals about New York! (Annie, Hamilton, NEWSIES) And I live in Colorado. LOL, where has my life gone.

Yeah. I'm gonna stop talking now.

I love musical theater! I must say, I've not seen Hamilton (gasp, I know) but i love musicals! One of my favs is Matilda the Musical. I also like Newsies. I was in the school production of Guys and Dolls last year, as the only female ganster! All the others were hotbox girls. I've been in all of the school plays so far. This year it's Bye Bye Birdie. Has anyone seen it or heard of it? I haven't, so it would be cool if someone had.

I was in Bye Bye Birdie. It's... well, it's... I'm gonna stop talking now. Reserve judgments on it. The music is mostly pretty good (personally I hate "How Lovely To Be A Woman" but the rest is fairly good) so...
