Religious debates.

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Religious debates.

Religious debates.

I don't think we should have any more religious debates. I don't want to point fingers at anyone, and I won't say names, but some of the comments and attitudes on these threads are offensive and hurt my feelings. As I've said before, religion is not based off fact. It's based off OPINION, and that's why no one will ever 'win' one of those debates. And that's okay. I like that we're all different and we have different opinions and feelings. But debating about them... that's what I feel is wrong. Because there is no proof. I believe in God, but I can't tell you exactly why. And I'm not going to try, either.

I like learning about other religions. I think if we learned about each other's holidays and rituals and ceremonies, that would be really nice. But debating won't get us anywhere. Even if we try to do it as nicely as we can, feelings could still be hurt.

You're going to say, 'If you don't like religious debates, then don't read them! Don't participate on them!' You have a point. But I think that feelings could be hurt by the religious debates, and not just mine. And we wouldn't want hard feelings between any of us, right?

Again, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone specific. I've gotten awfully heated too sometimes. And since this was a very heavy post I'm going to add a smiley :) just to keep things smiley. Bad joke, yeah. I'm full of them.

Ok I think I get where you're coming from. Tell me if I'm right/wrong:

I think it's because in your religion, you think of it more as a culteral type thing. You think of religion as guidlines on how to live a good life. You see in my perspective, religion is more God-centered, so when we say there's one religion, it's our religion is trying to please God, so.... hmmmm.... well now I lost it. :D But point is, I think to YOU religion is a little different than it is to us.

I TOTALLY agree with you MJ! :D:D I saw something from the Catechism (spelling ? ;) ) about religious truth that really helped me. I'll post it if I find it. Some of you said that you have a religion that is God centered, but you don't believe in god. There's no point in religionif you don't believe in God.

I agree. I am Catholic, too and in order to be real something has to be based upon facts. It is not someone's opinion whether something is true or not.

"As I've said before, religion is not based off fact." but religion is fact for me! :) I agree with you to a certain extent, Lena, but I like reading and posting on those threads! I like to share what I believe with others! I'm not going to try to force my faith on anybody, but I am going to post what I believe. If the conversation gets too heated, then Admin won't post it. That's what Admins are for, right? :)

I agree with you, Julia. I do not believe that there's a true religion for every individual, but like you, I like talking about what I believe because it's a major part of my life.

Sorry, I have to agree with Julia- yes, things can get too heated, but that's what the Administrators are here for. And in the long run, we're just smart people with nothing better to do than discuss things for days on end, nd when all's said and done, there are no hard feelings and we're all friends, and I can hardly remember who said what or who agreed/disagreed with me. Am I right?

Well, that's sort of my point. Your religion is fact for you. Maybe it's not fact for the rest of us. I know you like posting on these threads, and you're not forcing your faith on anyone, but sometimes people can post what they believe a little, er, heatedly.

Well, yes, but even Admin made a long post somewhere (I think Chirp at Cricket?) about how some religious posts on here were getting a tad defensive and that it's a very touchy subject. I definitely don't think this means we can't mention religion - in fact, I'm very interested in learning about others' religions, holidays, traditions, etc. But I, honestly, see no solid reason why anyone's debating anything at all about religion. Everyone has their beliefs, and if those beliefs work for them, then there's no reason trying to change or challenge those beliefs. For instance, I have no definite religion, really, because my parents are two different religions and I believe things from both of them. However, this doesn't mean I think other religions are "wrong" or not as true as mine - not at all! And Lena's right about sometimes feelings being hurt.

Mary Jo, do you actually want an answer to your question?

Here goes:

You said what is the point in religion if there is no true one.

There IS no piont in religin. Other then it feels good to be a part of something, to be in a group, to think there is someone up there who loves you. Much blood has been spilled to find out what is the "true religion" ( each side believing it is their own, obviously) and to no avail. So please no more questions about true religion.
