The Grandfather Theory

The Grandfather Theory

Okay, so the Grandfather Theory is just one of the few things that makes me go loopy. Have you heard of it? It's like this:

If you go back in time and kill your grandfather, there won't be any you to go back to in the future.

Here's me trying to makes sense of it. (Ironically, me trying to make sense of it makes no sense whatsoever.)

If you go back in time and kill you grandfather, there isn't any you in the future. But if there isn't any you in the future, you couldn't have gone back in time and killed your grandfather in the first place. But if you didn't just go back in time to kill your grandfather, then you'd still be there in the future. But then you'd go back in time and kill your grandfather anyway, but then you wouldn't be in the future. And then what happens to the you that's in the past, having just killed your grandfather?

*Cries*

*Splutters*

So, can someone help me? Does anybody else know about the Grandfather Theory? It might not be widely known as the Grandfather Theory--it's basically the whole time-travel thing, where if you go and change the past, the future will be different.

*Sighs*

I've never heard of this theory, but both of my grandfathers were already deceased before I was even born! And . . . which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Well, I could just ignore the problem by saying the theory of alternate universes. Or, I could say that time travel is plain impossible. Or, I could say it would be impossible to change time. Or, there is the possibility of trying to change the past but not being able to, like killing someone you thought was your grandfather but actually wasn't, or not being able to kill your grandfather because someone keeps stopping you.

I've known about this theory for a while and mainly the 'solutions' are just skipping the problem in the first place.

I'm not sure what I believe myself.

You should read Time Travelling With a Hamster! I forget who it's by, but it involves a similar situation. On the main character's birthday, his mom gives him a letter from his dad, who died a while ago. It says that in the basement of the house they were living in at the time, there is a time machine, and the main character needs to go back in time to save his dad. It was a very good book, and I highly recommend it.
