Life update: we might be getting a dog!

We have a friend who breeds dogs, and she wants to give away one dog she has. The dog's name is Star and she is a three-year-old yellow lab. She is gentle, friendly, and well-trained. This seems like the perfect oppurtunity for us to get a dog... except my family has zero experience with them!

So are there any dog owners out there? What has your experience been? What are some of the challenges? How long could you leave your dog alone in the house?

Star would be for the most part my dog, to keep my company while my brother's at college I suppose... she could be his replacement (his name means dog, after all :)). I would give it maybe a sixty percent chance of us getting her! I really hope we do!

I have a dog! She's from a shelter, though, so my experience will probably be different than yours could be.

My experience has been great! My Bluebell is a really calm and well-behaved girl, usually. Because she lived as a stray for a while, she has a tendancy to eat any food within reach that we leave lying out, though I doubt you'd have that problem. She's also really overprotective, and barks at anyone who enters or exits the house until she gets a chance to sniff them properly.

As for leaving her alone, she's really good about that. Sometimes we have to leave her alone for over six hours, because we're all at school or work, and though she needs a good long walk when we let her out, she hasn't had any accidents and the house didn't burn down!

I hope you can adopt Star! She sounds like a great dog.

Thanks, St. Owl! Since I'm homeschooled and my dad works from home as well we won't have to leave the dog alone much, but it's good to know that if we're all out of the house for a while we won't have to get someone to check in on her. Bluebell sounds like a great dog!

Also her name is actually Stella, not Star! My mom misheard it.

That's so cool! I hope it works out!I have a dog, and he's great.

He is crate-trained, so when we leave we put him in his crate, and he also sleeps in his crate.  He is a lab Shepherd mix, so he does tend to herd my little brother, but you probably won't have that problem if she's a lab from a breeder.

I will be praying that you are able to get her.

Good luck!

A couple of months ago, my family got a puppy. A three-month old puppy.

DON'T GET A PUPPY!!!! (Unless, of course, you know exactly what the puppy will be like. With my puppy he seemed docile and then WHAM! Frenzy.)

He chews on the carpet, the couch and the chair. He has really weird hours. He's over enthusiastic when greeting people. He has a loud voice. He always wants to play. (I mean even at 10:00 PM)

But then, of course, there's the bright side. He's extraordinarily cute, and he naps a lot. He loves, loves, l-o-v-e-s people, and  always seems like, "You're back! Let me lavish you with kisses! Oh why did you leave me!" whenever one of us gets home. He's also just finished potty training and he's extremely smart.

As for leaving the dog alone, it depends on the dog. Some dogs can be home all day and fine. Others need attention.

If Star is well trained, all of the problems I mentioned should be, well, not a problem. I hope you get her!

Oh man, I don't think we're ready for a puppy! How long have you had yours? Is he hard to train? Thanks for your comment, Pepper Star!

Hey, I really hope it works out! I don't have a dog so I can't really help you out... Just to let you know, last night I prayed for you and your fam (and your maybe dog). Hope all goes well!

Oh, hi, Shoshannah! I really like your name. It's very nice. I don't have a dog but I do have a fox and foxes are Undecided kind of like a dog. I take Foxy everywhere in a case; I have a cat, and a monkey, and she is not very friendly towards them XD

I'm sorry your brother is at college! I know what you feel like. I have a brother named Kyle that's in college. Not that I care (he's quite annoying and mean), but I have an extremely large family and so...yah.

Oh wow, you have some cool pets! What is it like to have a pet monkey? My brother isn't at college yet, but when he is I will definitely miss him-- it's just the two of us and we are pretty close. Thanks Foxy!

My best advice (since I'm not a dog owner) is to figure out dog-business duty rotations.

I hope you do get a dog- they are amazing! I have two and I love them so much. In fact, I love all animals. All pet owners should consider themselves extremely lucky! Good luck.
