Debate Club!

I was thinking it would be really fun to start a Debate Club on the CB. I'm aware that in the past, some of the conversations became a little heated but I'm confident that if we remain polite and open minded, and if we steer clear of difficult topics, it should be fine.

You can vote on one of the topics below, and the most popular one will be the first theme. After a while, I will decide on the winner, and we'll move on to the next round. The judge of each round will randomly select someone from the winning team to be the new judge.

Topics:

1. The new StarWars movies vs. The old StarWars movies

2. Reading vs. Writing

3. Homework vs. No homework

4. Snape was 'good' vs. Snape was 'bad'

I'm going to vote for topic 1.

Enjoy!

The old StarWars movies were most definitely better than the new ones. They had much better story lines than the new ones - The Force Awakens is practically the same as A New Hope. Also, the originals were so lighthearted and easy to watch. The new ones, especially Rogue One, are really heavy. The New Starwars are appropriate for a smaller range of people. Thirdly, the new StarWars characters are bad. They have no complexity or flaws and are extremely unrelatable.

I have NO opinion on this subject, so I'll take the aide of the new movies because I feel like it's going to be less popular.  This is for the sake of debate ONLY, no emotions involved.

The New Star Wars Movies are Better

Reason number one: The special effects and graphics are way better.  Sure, the original Star Wars were good in their time, but the overall quality just cannot measure up.  The expanse of the crowds, the machines, the scenery- so much more immersive.  Most importantly, however, the characters.  Nothing lowers the level of tension like a bizarre puppet or strange costumes.  The old movies were constantly interrupted with this to remind us that there was no real battle, the movie was just that- a movie.

Reason number two: The new movies are, well, new.  We all love rewatching movies, but there is nothing to rival the experience of a new movie.  You get to experience that magic for the first time- a certain spark that just isn't there rewatching.

Reason Number three: A wider variety of characters.  There is undisputibaly more diversity in the newer movies, and that is universally a good thing.  There are also more prominent female characters.  We all loved Leia, sure, but Rey takes this thing to a whole other level.

BUT MARIGOLD DO YOU EVEN WATCH STAR WARS

Wh- whaaaaa?  Why would you even ask that?  I-

...heh

Nooooo...

whoa. whoa. whoa. old star wars are SOOO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!

reson one: they are deep. the story line takes emotions into account, therefore creating a beautiful, complex, heart-wrenching tale. the characters seem real, relatable, vunerable.

reason two: they are clear. there are no real "grey" areas in the old star wars. characters are either good or bad. again, this makes for a beautiful, classic saga that can easily draw the observers in and keep them thinking long after they leave the theatre.

reason three: you feel it.you know that they are better. there classic. who doesnt love classic??

I want grey characters, though. Black and white characters, while "classic", are sorta simple. They don't really make you think.

But who want characters who are either "good" or "bad"? The characters in the new StarWars movies are so much more complex, relatable and diverse. Maybe I just love strong female characters.

Secondly, the new StarWars movies are alot more deep. Sure, maybe that means that you shouldnt take your 6 year old to see Rogue One, but it's better viewing for older kids and adults.

Just saying, but the script in the prequals is terr-i-ble. Like seriously?

"Love can't save you, Padme. Only my new powers can do that."

*Coughs* Okay then. There's no bad dialogue like that in the new movies...

And the winner is...The New Starwars movies! I didn't really have an opinion on this, as I love both equally, but Marigold and LilyPad, I think you've convinced me otherwise. Well done!

And, Marigold would you like to judge the next round? You may choose the theme, preferably something you don't have an opinion on yet. You can use the vote topics as ideas if you want, or chose your own.

I'm still writing my post on the New vs. Old, but can we all agree that the Anakin trilogy is clearly the worst of the three?

1. Padme never struck me as very interesting or strong for a female character. Leia is headstrong and a good leader, and Rey is hardworking and kindhearted. Padme is... well, nothing really stood out to me about her.

2. The Anakin/Padme romance is so weird. They didn't have much chemistry, and their relationship felt forced. Padme met him when he was a little kid!

3. Jar Jar Binks.

Thank you for listening,

Okay, here's my arguement: why do we all complain about the prequals when true Star Wars fans know that the sequals are worse?

Solo and Rouge One were pretty good, but Force Awakens and Last Jedi? Force Awakens was pretty much the same plot as A New Hope, just Freshened up. And I so hate in The Last Jedi with the flying Leia thing. It was just- just bad. The whole movie felt more like a drama then a sci-fi.

I'm not saying the prequals were very good, either. I'm just a fan of the classic ones.

Boo says fxth. fix the what? The new Star Wars movies? I'm afraud we can't anymore, Boo.

If Marigold doesn't reply by tomorrow night, Fidelity may be the next judge. Maybe Marigold could judge the next round.

AAH!  Sorry!  If you'll still let me be judge, I'd really like to!

If it's okay, then here are the options (I picked ones that I am not opinionated on :3):

1. Sci-Fi v. Fantasy

2. Mobile  Games v. Console Games

3. Cocoa v. Coffee
