Random Thoughts/Things?

Random Thoughts/Things?

I wasn’t really sure what to call this thread, but I’ve had this idea floating around in my head for awhile now. Basically, anyone can post anything here. Any random thought you have, any random thing that happens to you, any random question that pops into your mind. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to be random.

Peri,

Thank you for responding! I'm glad that my words were understandable and provoked your own thinking. As for "generally smarter", whether or not that is true I believe intelligence takes many forms. I do not--and I certainly hope you don't--dismiss your own "smartness". You are incredibly thoughtful and intuitive. I think it takes much more of another intelligence to understand and appreciate the thoughts and beliefs of others, even when they may not wholly align with your own. I really admire that quality in you, and I hope you recognize it too!

Also, I think it is awesome that you have such a talent and passion for complimenting people specifically and genuinely! To be clear, I think compliments can be meaningful and worthwhile even if they aren't very deep. Like, if you told a stranger on the street that you like their nose, it might make their whole day (who nose?). And if it is your personal conviction to compliment as many people as possible, I think that is great as well, just (as you mentioned) as long as it doesn't make it a chore.

Finally, while there are flaws to every system, I thought Jaybells' thread had a great way to incentivize complimenting new people without making it mandatory, and my intent was never to criticize that. Your system also works in the way it's intended, the downsides considered as you mentioned. <[another thing about that is that while you may feel compelled to compliment people, it is not your responsibility to compliment everyone, especially so far that it causes you stress. We know you care and we appreciate you!]> No system is perfect, but I think the goal to facilitate encouragement is achieved most of the time.

I'm so grateful we could have this conversation and can have conversations like these! Thank you, Peri! I am in always in awe of your kindness! <3

Oh Peri I'm so sorry you feel that way. I do think the present system of compliment threads ought to be tweaked, so that nobody ends up feeling left out. They can give the impression that some CBers are more "popular" than others, whereas actually, I've always felt like everyone on here is genuinely interested in others. There are some CBers who are more well-known, of course. (I think you're one of them! :)) But not CBers who are more "popular."

Regardless of whether you were complimented, I've always liked you, and I think most of us do. You're very good at making others feel good about themselves, and your efforts to revive the CB back when it was having a quiet phase were great. I think we all appreciate you - it's just that that wasn't evident on the compliment thread, for which I'm sorry.

Lastly, even if you weren't appreciated (which isn't true :) but just supposing it were true), the things you do would still be important. Regardless of what other people may think, you are still a wonderful and unique person. Hope this makes you feel better. :)

Love you Peri! Happy holidays!

So, Peri, this always going to be a tricky business, and we'll continue tweaking it as we go. It may never be perfect, but I really admire the way you try so hard. As kind as you are, you don't have to shoulder everything alone. We're all here with you, and can work together to smooth it all out! I think all of us have flaws in our ideas, but by combining them and building off of each other, we'll inevitably get closer to what's best for everyone, right?

Of course, if anyone have any suggestions, do share!

I'm already brainstorming some reforms to the current system, like incentivizing mentioning someone who was 'skipped'(posted but never got mentioned) and requiring each entry to mention at least one CBer who hasn't been complimented on the thread yet, as well as someone who's made x-amount of entries, or something like that. Perhaps the more times you're mentioned, the more compliments you have to give, or you get a penalty of sorts? I also need a little help deciding how to determine and reward more thoughtful compliments...

Anyway, I'd be grateful if anyone shared their thoughts, and pointed out the strengths/weaknesses of these and future suggestions!

I love those ideas! Maybe we could have something like, give a compliment to get a compliment, and if you do get a compliment, give another one or something? I definitely like the idea of adding someone who has yet to be complimented.

I just learned the expression "it's brick outside" last night, and I was quite literally on the floor laughing for a cumulative 15 minutes or so.

The cast of Newsies (1992) made a horror-comedy spoof that gives "camp counselors on their off day" vibes.

Don't even ask me how school went or why I'm so excited to go back.

It is currently one degree colder where I live (somewhere on Long Island, NY) than it is in Utqiagvik, AK, the northernmost town in the US.

Happy Holidays!
